Receives Cotlo Through His Frontal
Rone.
SOUTH BEND, Ind., May 22.
William E. Elliott, agent for tho
Nickel Plato railroad at Tippecanoe,
is probably tho onlx totally deaf
telegrapher in tho world. Although
unable to distinguish any kind of a
sound, he is able to perform all the
duties required of an operator, and
will likely hold his olllce for several
years to come.
When Elliott entered tho employ
of the railroad ho was possessed of
as good oars as any man, but about
20 years ago his hearing began to
fail, and being unable to And a cure
ho set about to experiment in order
that he would not bo thrown out of
employment.
An old horsewhip fell into his
hands. Cutting a piece about two
feet long from tho butt end, he at
tached to It a metal plate. The
other end wns placed tigalnst tho
telegraph sounder. Then placing
his forehead to tho plato, ho re
ceived the codo through his frontal
bono and solved tho problem.

"NEW YORK, May 22. James
Moore's habit of doing road work In
his sleep landed him in tho East
River about daybreak, and but for
the efforts of Policemen Morris and
Haribas and Christopher Kelly he
might now be walking in another
world. His three rescuers formed a
human chain, with Morris on the
business end, and Moore was dragged
up on tho dock from which he had
walked Into tho river at tho foot of
East Fifty-second street.
Moore lives at No. 354 West Fifty
fifth street.
"I've been walking in my sleep for
a number of years," said Moore,
when seen yesterday. Sometimes I
wake up and And myself In Brook
lyn. Tills is the Arst time I ever
swam In my sleep."
