The schools of Coos Cay are devel oping Into a system of which the citizens will sometime have a right to be proud. It cannot be said, how ever, that they are in advance of the needs of tho locality or that they have made any special arrangements as yet to receive the pupils who are likely to seek their advantages next year. North Bend, it is true, will have its new school with its higher grades at Bangor, and Marshfleld will have its high school In South Marshfleld. So far so good. It is not so much the buildings which are needed as a proper equipment, a competent, up-to-date corps of teach ers, and sufficient funds to pay such salaries as will procure such teach ers. Except at Marshfleld and North Bend there is no high school within sixty miles of the Bay and these are the only high schools in the vicinity of a population of 20,000 people such being the estimate of the pres ent census of Coos and Curry coun ties. Competent teachers are necessary to the success of any school assum ing to supply an academic education. By competency is meant the ability to interest the pupil and impart to him or her the training and learn ing which schools are established to supply. The teacher who is not con scientious and does not do his or her work properly is not only a cheap servant but deceives himself or her self if ho or she believes the children do not discover it. Failure to inter est a child of ordinary intelligence In the school work, more especially in the primary and grammar grades, Is tho fault of the teacher in nearly ovory instance. Falluro to train a child to pass a given grade in a sin gle school year unless tho child is below ordinary intelligence Is near ly always tho teacher's fault. Indif ference, inattention to the pupils needs, injustice in little things, favoritism, lrrltablencss are faults in a teacher which may retard tho educational work seriously and In variably produce similar faults in the pupil. Tlieso faults may bo ex cusable in tho individual, but not in a teacher. A teacher who has them is not entitled to a good salary, but a teacher who does not have them and who does good work on a small salary, is certainly entitled to have tho salary Increased. If such a teacher Is incapablo of interesting a pupil of ordinary intelligence in tho grade work and lets tho child waste two years or one year's work, that teacher is not up to the standard. A high school at Marshfleld ought to bo a drawing card for tills city. If tho peoplo would lako prido In having a well-equipped school with n corps of competent teachers thero is no reason why tho peoplo of this county nnd of Curry county should not send their children to such schools and make their homes hero to take advantage of tho opportunity. A third rnto high school will bo a falluro and it woro better to have none if not tho best. Nobody, not evon homo peoplo, caro to oncourago an inferior high school and many who would prefer to remain at Coos Bay will go elsowhoro if tho educa tional advantages aro not suflleiont. Indeed, they havo dono so. It has boon claimed by sonio that Marsh flold does not need a high school lio causo tho present conrso its but slen derly patronized. Tho fact that tho course- is deficient is responsible for tho failure and thnt dollcloncy is not tho fault of tho principal but of tho narrow environment in which ho is forced to work. "A "S Omar Khayyam. A The Smoker's Sad Lot. The man who smokes 10-cent cigars Or two-fers, stogies, or a pipe, Who puffs inside the smoking cars The smokestack's human prototype (Perhaps that simile's not right, But "pipe" has none too many rhymes) Is apt to hear this day or night Till through his memory It chimes; "You smoke too much." If he complains about his health And says that his digestion's bad, They drop the hint on him by stealth And for the opening aro glad. If he observes that times are hard And that he cannot save enough, With this remark thy'll interlard His constant rhythmic draw and puff; "You smoke too much." It gets so when he misses trains, Or buys a suit that doesn't fit, Or when his taste for drama wanes, Or when he shows a caustic wit, Or when his hair is falling out, Or when his teeth begin to ache, Some critic then Is sure to shout And this remark is what he'll make: "You smoke too much." No matter what the poor man does, No matter what he doesn't do, No matter what the poor man was, Nor what hard luck he struggles through; If ho should have ingrowing nails, Or if his voice in singing fails, Somebody else is sure to speak: "You smoke too much." Ex. Other Animals. "Doc," declared the bibulous pa tient to a Coos Bay doctor, "I can't sleep." "Try counting sheep." "But, doc, I don't see no sheep." H CRYSTAL THEATRE ToNight, Friday and Saturday May 2123 A DRAMA IX SEVILLE A fascinating story of Spanish life. The pic ture shows, with remarkable detail, a most exciting and dangerous bull light in tho great arena at Seville, Spain. A film of unusual interest with many dramatic situations. RARY'S FIRST OUT1XG The nurse gets careless and the baby's ad ventures are intensely comic and laughable.
