Geo. i .i. r -. ---I........... An audience that filled the Baptist church last night greeted Itev. F. Jones of Philomath, Ore., who ad dressed the people or Marshfield on tho theme "Home vs. the Saloon." His address was an argument for ab solute prohibition, a plea for tho voters of Coos county to voto "dry" at the local option election, June 2d, and was frequently applauded by the audlenco. After using a Bible illustration to show how God always aids right eousness, even though the battle may bo against odds, to victory, Mr. Jones took up tho moral and monetary phases of tho liquor question, speak ing In part as follows: "Wo are all agreed, I believe, that uio moral suio ot tlio liquor ques tion is with prohibition. I havo never heard that challenged, tho oppo nents of prohibition, nearly always confining their arguments to the money side of it. They claim that prohibition kills towns and communi ties but these allegations are untrue: on the contrary, 1 will cito you in stances right hero in Oruiron wlinrn towns and counties have been bone fitted by prohibition. "Take Corvallls, for instance. When Jhe local option was submitted there, tho usual cry went up that prohibition would kill tho town and community. The untrue anneal wa3 in vain and Corvallls and the county wont dry. The next spring, $175, 000 was invested in rosldencns nmi Savago, other improvements in Corvallls that Coryell, ' novor would hnro urnm tlinm iimi it remained wet tho investors lieinir people who wanted to inovo to a city to educate their children, but who wero determined not to movo to a place whero their children would bo endangered by the demon rum. Cor vallls is making more rapid progress now than ever before. Tho superln- jtendent of the public schools told mo that lour teachers had to by liquor brought to him from Al bany. "Don't compromise in this great fight. The regulated saloon that the liquor men plead for when they re cognize they are being defeated by the mighty hosts of righteousness is a farce. The thing to do Is to separate liquor from man entirely if you don't, there is trouble. The only way to do this by absolute pro hibition. The other day, the Mayor of Myrtle Point came around to me and outllried what ho thought would be the right kind of a saloon, say ing that if there aren't saloons there will bo blind pigs. His plea was wrong and I am right hero to say tho bind pigs can bo driven out if tho people and the officials are alert and ready to do their work. One trouble with the regulated saloon is that the liquor business breeds law lessness. I have never seen or heard of a saloon man who didn't con stantly violate tho laws under which he was supposed to be operating. "I am glad that Marshfield has closed its saloons at nights and on Sundays and now I am confident that tho people of C003 county will do tho right thing and vote June 2d, to close them all the time." &ttmmmttmtmttmtmmttmttmmttmtttmtmtmttmtm 4 i Store your Goods wit'i thn rnv Side Paint Co., North Bend. w o Ak o ToNight, Tuesday and Wednesday WAY DOWN EAST A moving: picture dramatization of the famous play of New England life.
