Committee of City Council mid Hur- nett Street Property Owners to Meet Delay Ohio Street Work. A meeting of the property owners of Burnett street and the street com mittee of the elty council and the city engineer will shortly bo held to endeavor to agree upon the Improve ment of tho street. It Is hoped that an early agreement can be effected in order that the Improvement may be made this summer. Sometime ago, the city council or dered the grade of Burnett street to be established and the thoroughfare lmprbved. Owing to the grade at one place being about fourteen feet higher than some of the abutting lots and at another place being far below tho abutting lots, tho property own ers protested vigorously against the proposed grade. Tho remonstrance which they have sent In to tho city council is sufficient to hold up the work Indefinitely. The property own ers do not protest against the Im provement of the street but are op posed to the proposed grade. They claim that the grade line should be altered so as to more nearly conform with the affected property. Claude Nasburg Is chairman of the Street Committee, the other members be ing Councilman Sacchi and Savage. Owing to the remonstrance which the property owners of Ohio avenue have made against the proposed Im provement of that sjreet, tho work has been declared off. The property owners say that they are not ready to have the work done now. As the Improvement would only be of bene fit to the abutting property, the thoroughfare not being needed to reach any other section, tho city council has declared the work In definitely postponed. MIGHT nt'RT REFERENDUM. In Oregon tho referendum has been Invoked by persons hostile to the State University to tie up the appropriations for that institution. At tho last general assembly of Ore gon a bill was passed Increasing the university appropriation from $47, 500 to $125,000. Tho bill had prac tically unanimous vote In the gen eral assembly. Now, however, It must, upon petition from a number of voters, bo approved at tho next general election. In tho meantime of course the University suffers. To have the -people veto the legitimate appropriation bill would not only cripple high education In Oregon but be a blow to the system of re ferendum. It is to be hoped that there will be no such result. Daily Herald of Columbia, Mo. Total Receipts $ 1 .BtfO.OOO Oregon RiihIiics $MO,()((. WASHINGTON, May 9.
