Doyle of Wedderburn, is cir culating petitions in Coos and Curry counties to have his name go on the June election ballots as an independ ent Democratic candidate for joint State representative from the two counties. This will mnke a con test for. Colonel I. N. Muncy, the Re publican nominee. Undergoes Operation. Tom Coats, who reached Marshfield on tho Plant last Sunday was taken to the General hospital yesterday where ho under went an operation for appendicitis, Drs. Baumbaugh and Ingram attend ing him. The operation was success ful and he was reported resting easy today. Will Sell Hides. Marshal J. W. Carter has attached a bundle of hides at Empire City belonging to G. N. Burns, in compliance with an order of Justice Pcnnock. The hides will be sold by Marshal Carter to satisfy a lien of R. E. Shine and others. Mr. Burns was formerly in tho meat mar ket business at Empire. Has Scarlet Fever. Tho home of L. R. Robertson was quarantined today on account of their little four year old daughter being taken ill of scarlet fever. Mr. Robertson, who was away from home when the little girl was taken ill, has secured rooms down town and will not bo affected by the quarantine regulations. Tho many friends of Janice and the fam ily will hope for her early recovery. Beats lis Pleased. District Fore caster E. A. Aaron Wilson has resigned his position at the O, K. Creamery and intends to erect a creamery at Lee. A petition was circulated this week asking B.H. Burns, road super visor, to call a special election for the purpose of voting a 5 mill tax to complete tho now road from tho Falrviow lino to this city, E. S. DUTTLE went up Coos river today for an outing and also to investigate some possiblo sites for a nice "Bungalow," which ho Is planning to build. MISS LAURA KRUSE of Porter ex pects to leave on the Bantlon on its next trip from the Coquille to San Francisco. She will spend considerable tlmo in California vis iting friends and relatives. THE REV. FATHER CURLEY left this morning for Curry county in response to a message announcing the serious illness of Mrs. Frank McMullen, a pioneer resident of southwestern Oregon. W. J. RUST returned yesterday from Coquille where he has been doing jury duty. He was a member of tho jury in the Oldland case, and was excused from further duty after a verdict had been secured. MRS. EMMA BOWNE left here today for her home at San Rafael, Cal: She was called hero a few weeks ago by the death of her father, Mr. Dlvelblss who was stricken with heart disease while endeavor ing to extinguish the flro which destroyed the family home in Cur ry county on The Sixes river. NORTH BEND NEWS C. Ross of Pleasant Point, was a North Bend visitor yesterday. Miss Eugene Noel of North Bend, will go to North Inlet today to visit her sister, Mrs. Win. Judd. Philip Fourier has reopened tho meat market on Sherman avenue. Mrs. John Freeland and son, Clifford, will go to North Inlet today to visit relatives. Jesse Pyrell left a couple of days ngo to attend tho Oregon Barber's Convention in Portland. The Redondo came in yesterday from San Diego and went to Porter to take on a cargo for tho south. The funeral of C. L. Parker, which was held from the Parker homo yes tesday afternoon was largely at tended. ' The new chorus will meet tonight at the Methodist Episcopal church, for rehearsal under tho direction of L. L. Putnam. Mrs. Hayes Temple and son, Bruce, have returned from Portland whero they have been visiting relatives and friends tor the past three weekB. The North Bend Knights of Py thias will hold a special meeting to night to prepare for tho district con vention which will bo held In Marsh field, May 20th. A grand ball and banquet will bo one of tho features of the convention but tho most inter est centers in tho drill contest and the North Bend team hopes to tako first place and capture tho fine tro phy which is hung up for tho event. Tho receipts for tho past six months for tho sheriff's ofilco have been as follows: October, 1907, $3, 764.55; November, $738.44; Decem ber, ?590.53; January, 1708, $13, 308.88; February, $790.63; March, $217,768.41. Total, $224,983.44. Only about one-fifth of the taxes re main unpaid, most of theso being half payments which nro duo any time before October 6th. The now systom of collecting taxes has been proven to bo tho only system, as less mistakes can occur than under the old system, which was not satis factory.
