Oregon PUBLIC FOLLY. The American pcoplo are dis gusted with tho great railroad com panies and private speculators, which hold vast areas of valuable timber land and refuse to comply with the terms on which they re ceived the grant. What do tho American people want to do with these lands in case tho grants are annulled? Do they want them to so &nck to the public domain to be purchased at $1.25 per aero by "homo seekers"? Is not that foolish ness? Will a man make his homo on one hundred and sixty acres of Jand containing Ave million feet of timber? Will he clear it? Or will be sell the tract as soon as he has titlo to it to some syndicate? If the latter, then where have the Ameri can peoplo been benefitted? Tho fact Is this land is only speculative Jand and will not be converted into farms unless the timber Is cut off .and wasted. That would bo a mis fortune, too. Now tho truth is plain. For ex ample, it is said tho value of timber Jioldlngs under grants which the .grantees are in duty bound to sell out In lots of ono hundred and sixty acres to a settler at $2.50 per acre is $35, 000,000 in Oregon alone. Un doubtedly, if the railroad and land companies lose them they will all be syndicated again and absolutely withheld from general settlement. Thcro Is probably no other way to Jjandlo theso forests to tho best ad vantage than to syndicato them and 2et largo aggregations of capital establish saw mill plants. But why should tho government sell a tract worth fifty dollars an -acre to a gen tleman Just Ironi Syria for $2.50 and tbi-n feol charitable because tho Syrian has made $4 0.50 per aero or 7,410 profit? True tho gentlemen f tho syndicato must pay out money, but why to tho Sjrian who does no thing but allow tho title to filter through his nnino from Undo Sam to some corporation? That tho chanco to get such a tract would bo lottery as corrupt as that of Loui siana seems clear enough. Why doesn't Uncle Sam cancol tho grants if the law decrees it, and then soil theso lands for what they aro worth? Better still, why not turn over tho lands in Oregon to tho Stato for $2.50 per aero adding in terest and such taxes as have been paid, returning thoso burns to tho companlos nnd requiring Oregon to soil thorn for what they aro worth? Then, why not require tho Stato to plnro tho money in a fund which shall bo used to mako good roads in tho Stato. It would bo u great Bchomo to get some $30,000,000 to 7iinko good roads in a Stato where ueh roads are badly needed. Tho public needs roads inoro than it needs to havo a lot of money wildly distributed thiough tho country. This habit of throwing away oppor tunities Is a silly one. Why put n lnlm which a mun can neither cul tivate, improve nor clear in tho hands of u man without means nnd Jot that man mako from $5,000 to $10,000 without doing a stroke for the jiubllo or tho Stato and. In a majority of eases havo oven that tnko carried out of tho Stato when It would bo so easy to divert tho Hood of money to making tho -rnuntry lit to live in, and giving thousands of honest men honest w ork to do? It Is submitted thnt this Is lmply common souse, lias any senator, Fulton or Bonnie, courage or i.atrlotisiu onough to suggest It? Tho Dutch In Holland aro not so foolish as the Americans. Tho aro roLluladng through dralnagu u largo part of mi Intorlor salt lako called tho Zuydor Zeo nnd they do not slvo it away but thoy boll It for 33,000 per aero and uso the money to Improre tho country. r I; With the Toast and Tea ;: ,..,,.,.,,,.,............... ,,,,:,c.,.,,I WHOA THERE, BEEF! It's time to lure tho smiles along and help tho world bo gay; It's time to sing tho happy song and whistlo care away. It's time to gladly leave behind tho sorrow and the sighs; It's time to look for joy and find each cranny where It lies. It's time to hoist the flags for mirth and shout huzzah to Glee; Give Joy tho freedom of the earth, drive Woo Into tho sea; It's time to hide the frowns and let the songs of gladness rise Tho world is laughing; let's forget tho sorrow and tho sighs. S. E. KISER. It lmi't so much what you see In w thing us what you get out of It This world is but a fleeting show and for the most part overudvertised. The mountainous wnves threatened to engulf the struggling ship at any moment. The captain ordered n bo. of skyrockets and lliuvs brought to the rail and with his own hands Ig nited them hi the hope thnt they would make known his distress to some pass Ing ship. Amid the rockets' glare an austere Individual made his way to the rail and reproved the captain as follows: "Captain, I must protest against this unseemly bravado. We are now fac ing death. This Is no time for n ecle bratlon." Everybody's. Correct. "Now, can any of you tell mo what Is water?" !uked the teacher at tho end of ii u object lesson. "Please, teacher, water's what turns black when you nut jour hands in It!" Infantile Knowledge. Little lioMillo, aged six, was watch ing her mother label some glasses of preserves.
