How to Make Money BBHBHBHHMBi MOTHE MAIL ROUTE IS CHANGED R KNOWS JONAH DAY" Mrs. A. H. Stutsman of Marsh field, Victim of Much Hard Luck in One Day. Tuesday is Mrs. A. H. Stutsman's "Jonah Day". If you don't bollovo It, read this summary of hard luck that she en countered tho day before yesterday; Someone broke tho windows out of her launch and sunk it, causing $50 or $75 damage. Her cow broke loose and was placed in the city pound, requiring $5 to get her out. Her pet rabbits broke out of the cage and ate up a neighbor's garden, incurring their wrath. Her young son fell off the North Bend dock and almost drowned in tho bay before he was rescued. All came in rapid succession but even fato couldnt overcome the cheery good nature of one of Marsh field's most able and best known business women. She immediately set to work righting things and Wednesday brought a turn of affairs tbat more than offset tho grief en countered tho day before. The damage done to tho boat is alleged to have been done by mis creants. Mrs. Stutsman lias a clue to their identity and will have them punished for the contemptible trick. Tho launch, which sho recently had rebuilt and was about to name tho "Emma Francis," was standing at Tom Howe's dock. The windows were broken In and tho craft sunk In such a position that a log nearby would havo crushed in the cabin had II not been for the timely discovery by Tom Howo. Tho craft Is being raised today and until then, tho ex tent of tho damages will not be known. NORTH BEND PLANT BURNS Casting Department of Iron Foundry Burns Depart ment Forgot Nozzles. Fire of unknown orgin yesterday nfternoon caused a loss of about $500 at tho North Bend Iron Found ry's plant in North Bond. Tho dam ago consisted largely of tho destruc tion of the casting department build ing. Luckily tho patterns of tho company wore saved. Tho North Bond flro department ruado a quick run to tho blazo but when they arrived, they discovered that tho nozzles had been accident ally lert at tho flro house. Tho llro was spreading rapidly but they could not do anything until tho nozzles ivero secured. Finally, somo hose fiom tho sash and doors factories adjoining was strung and tho blazo, vhlch was threatenting to spread, extinguished. Tho foundry is in close proximity to tho sash and door factories and hud it not been for tho provailing calm at tho time, tho latter would l'nvo been in serious dangor. After April 1st, North Bend Will Have Direct Service to and From Roseburg. Notice has been received in North Bend that after April 1 that city will be given improved mail service to and from outside points. This will be done by changing the Roseburg Marshfleld routo to tho Roseburg North Bend route, thus making direct service and avoiding the delay that was caused by having to transfer the mail at Marshfield. It is claimed that this will mean the delivery of outside mall to the North Bend post ofllco several hours earlier than at present. The North Bend Chamber of Com mcrco took tho matter up with the United States 1'ostofllce department sometime ago. Yesterday, A. Whis nant received a letter from Congress man Hawley In which was enclosed a letter from tho United States Post olllce department announcing that the change had been ordered, as re quested, effective April 1. Tho change will be made by slm pl having tho mall launch that now runs from Sumner to Marshfield making North Bend instead of Marshfield the terminus of its run. Tlio mail Is delivered at Sumner to the launch by the stage company. After April 1, the launch will stop at Marshfield and leave the mail destined here and then proceed dir ectly to North Bend with tho mail for that point. The outgoing mail will bo picked up at North Bend, then a stop will bo made at Marsh field to pick up tho outgoing mall from here and the run to Sumner made direct. MRS M'LEOD WINS ACTION MAY BUY FIRE BOAT FOR COOS BAY SERVICE. North Bend and Marslilleld Itusims.s Mon Discuss Feasibility of The IMnn. North Bond nnd Marshfield men are discussing tho feasibility of pur chasing and equipping a firo boat for ubo on tho Bay. Owing to tho nuiuorous largo plants, nearly nil of woodon construction, near tho wat er's odgo, many claim that tho fire piotection would grntly Improved by having a regulnr firo boat in com mission,' Tho ono bout under consideration In connection with tho plan la tho Katie Cook, K. It Is stated Hint tho boat will throw four largo streams four stories high and by purchasing additional hoso would In of decided advautago in lighting big Urea at oven qulto distance from tho Bay. Tho case of Frances McLeod of Murtdifleld vs Pacific States Telo hoiio and Telegraph Company was decided in the Oregon Supremo court March 2 4 In favor of the plaintiff, re versing tho decision of Judgo Harris rendered sometime ago. It was an action brought by Mrs. Frances McLeod, Court stenographer, against the Telephono Company for falling to call her to tho phono and by which sho lost employment to the extent of $1,2S0. Judgo Harris hold that as sho was not a party to tho contract, tho Telopliono Company did not owo any duty to her. Tho Su proino Court holds that tho Telo pliono Company Is responsible to the recievor of tho messago as well as to tho sender, when the former would bo benefited by tho call being delivered, no matter whether sho paid for tho messago or not. Other Cases Up. Tho tax ease of Mrs. M. E. Hall vs Eugeno O'Connell was decided in fnvor of tho plaintiff. The Supremo Court affirmed the decision of tho lower court in this action. Tho caso of E. O. Hall vs Eugeno O'Connell hns not yet been decided by tho Supremo Court. TICKETS SELL WELL FOR LIBRARY BENEFIT. Save $1.00 on your Fishing Tackle. " 2.00 " Dishes. " 3.00 " Spray Pump.
