As a Sher lock Holmes the editor of Tho Times must admit that ho is an "also ran." In a detective contest for a steamer he wouldn't be awarded a gang plank to one of O'Kelly's launches. This public announcement that he Is not in the Heney and Burns class when it I comes to ferreting secrets is occa-1 sioned by the lovely bouquet of flow-! ers that gave an evanescent touch ot I beauty to tho editorial sanctum the other day. The flowers came without any card or legend that might iden-l tify tho generous and thoughtful donor, tjio editor was curious, as editors sometimes are. He began an investigation. On one of the pieces of paper in which tho flowers were en closed was some writing which had been purposely obliterated. It proved to be an address on an official-looking envelope. Ah! thought the edi tor, a clue. With much difficulty he deciphered "Miss M. Williams, Em pire Oregon." or something like that. This grows Interesting, thought the editor. Then he set In motion tho vast organization which ho controls and maintains for securing informa tion, and in a short time was in pos session of the fact that thero was or had been a Miss Williams in Empire, but sho was now Mrs. R. H. Olsen. "Ah!" thought tho editor again, "Discovered!" Ho was very well sat isfied that nothing could escape his eagle eye and Titanic intellect. Then he wrote the notice and thought how surprised Mrs. R. H. Olsen would ,be when she read it. Sho was sur prised. She sent no flowers and could not understand the editorial rhapsody. The flowers came from 1 Empire, but the donor was Mrs. John Flanagan, who desired to perform j her little act of kindness incognito 1 sub rosa with the roses, as It were. 1 The editor is not going -to take back any of tho nice things said about Mrs. Olesen, for he knows she is a lover of flowers, but ho desires to say all those things to Mrs. Flanagan, and add somo others, with wishes tnat tne only shadows which may ambll'i' la- uross ner 1'ainway uo snauows 01 tne Every one fwers that come to bless and beau tify her life. Hereafter when tho editor has any detective work to bo done ho will turn it over to Marshal Carter. 4h Sound Ring FS Business Directory Doctors. ourn . a A A.AA.A.Jk.A.Jk. A A. J. A. J, H.
