The Chamber of Commerce has de cided to take up the discussion of the ffree public library for Marshfleld wud next Friday ovening the meeting t of that body will be deveted to the subject. The movement for a pub- library has taken strong hold on ill the people and it is probable that ibo Wends of this proposed addition intellectual Marshfield will fill the rooms of the Chamber of Commerce molljind that many good speeches will Cse made. The School Board also Shave caught the spirit and the sug gestion has boon offered that a por tfon of the site for the new school at South Marshfleld bo dedicated to the use of the library. The prospects for a library are very gratifying. Probably the loca--fiion should be central, but the loca tion is not really not so Important as 4he realization of the institution it self. It is a fact that Marshfleld is singularly lacking in books and that St is not easy to find material from lo al references oven for the proper fillnatratlon or explanation of things which need to be understood at homo. 3 ono doesn't have to go more than Salt a mile or so from the center of $ho city to get books, ho or she should dcum himself or herself fortunate. The main thing is to have the library available. The building Itself will add to the strength of Its location as an settled center from which values win never fade. Tho books will add Go the orderly and Intelligent devel opment of the city and Its successful HMe. If the people could bo assured tat -a library through their own per nonal contributions it would be a very (creditable thing for them to estab lish it themselves, but there is so imacli to he done in Improving streets ana building tho foundation of a cifertlmt, at tho present tlmo and for nnimy years to come, tho chances are a. library in Its proper housing, will trc2uir tho aid of some largo outsldo Sund. It seems to bo "a Carnegie Sibrnry or none." We ennnot afford to lot our child con bo without a library. We could Jaavo better public and school Instruc tion, If a good llbrnry were avallablo. Teachers, professional men and all , classes would find their labors light ened instead or being often compelled fco Rropo in tho dark for want of tho BlKht which books afford. Tho Cham Qjct or Commorco meeting should bo tBllcd to ovorllowlng. It Is not to ho a mooting for tho collection of money, Out only to Intorest tho people and to enable tho Chnmbor to aid with tho strength and wisdom which it has tsbown nn unusual aptitudo in brins 3ns lo all public matters which it has hoson to consider. Assurance is given that tho school directors will donate gratis a site for the erection of the proposed Marshfleld public library on the northeast corner of the plot of four acres which will bo purchased from the I. O. O. P. cemetery association for the new Marshfleld public school. This liberal action should result In tho immediate co-operation of the citizens of Marahflold toward the raising of tlio desired $3,000 library fund. Tho new public school grounds abut the cemetery on the north. Tho land is practically cleared except for some stumpage. It Is the Intention to build tho sixteen room school building in the center of the plot; the center, when graded, will bo the high est part of the plat, the ground slop ing from it at a slight percentage to the boundaries, If some public- minded citizen will make tho dona tion it is the intention to erect In the northwest corner a combined gym nasium and assembly hall, to be named after the donor. Whllo the school spirit, so essen tial to the success of an educational Institution, is not lacking in the Marshfleld school, It is obvious that tho erection of a building such as is proposed, svould foster a much keener sense of patriotism and school ardor than now exists. It would ef fect an equalization of recreation and study, and this balance of variety be ing struck tho pupil would become Imbued with added ambition and zest for work. Dr. J. T. McCormac will leave shortly for an extended trip up the coast, where he will make a study of tho school buildings in the different cities with a view to inocrporating In the new Marshfleld school the lat est and best In school construction. Immediately after tho bond election on Saturday, March 14, at which the people of Marshfleld will vote on the matter of bonding the city for $50, 000, plans and specifications will be called for, for the new school build ing. The Case of Pettyjohn and Nichols against tho Oregon Coal and Navi gation company, Involving salvage because of tho recent accident to the steamer Plant, and which has been on trial for several days in Justice Pennock's court, was this morning decided in favor of tho plaintiffs. Tbo contention of the plaintiffs was that tho defendants acted contrary to tho marine law covering vessels with a salvage cargo in unloading tho goods consigned to them. The case has been appealed to tho el court. George Watkins appeared for tho plaintiffs and Clarke, Blako and Llljeqvist for tho defendants.
