ztwuhh ' 4 THE DAILY COOS BAY TIMES, MARSHFIELD. OREGON, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1908. W V PRAISE FOR RUE LADDIES' -Citizen Writes of Marshfield Fire Department and Duty of the City. Editor Times: Tho presentation of $250.00 to the fire department by Mr. John Mer chant in recognition of, and, in a measure, as a 'reward for the efficient efforts of tho fire laddies who re sponded to the alarm sounded by the siren Monday morning, which called them to the Merchant residence In South Marshfield, should not pass with only the brief mention contained in your columns of yesterday. Marshfield has more and better equipment for fire-fighting purposes than any other city of three times its population in the state, and no city has a department which is at once so loyal and capable. I am using these facts as a text for a brief statement as to tho duty of the Common Council in its care of tho department and of the obligation resting upon the business Interests of Marshfield in their encouragement of the boys who stand ever ready to risk their lives in the protection of prop their lives in the effort to protect property. Marshfield not only has, but in the main is, a conflagration district, and tho time may easily come at any moment when in order to prevent tho destruction of tho life's earnings and savings of men now deemed to bo secure in a competency, a trained and efficient fire fighting force will be necessary. Have the business interests of the city fully appreciated this fact? Or have they left the matter whol ly to tho council, trusting that It would provide an efficient depart ment, at tho same time reserving to themselves the Inalienable American Tight to complain of expenditures? The council can do much and I take It, is earnestly endeavoring to do everything possible to serve tho city, but the fact remains that our de partment Is a volunteer department, and the boys upon whom wo depend lor the protection of our property should by all means be encouraged in their self Imposed tasks. All honor to Johnny Merchant for his substantial and sentimental ap preciation of tho work of our fire boys. A CITIZEN. ENGLISH LUTHERAN CHURCH ORGANIZED Rev. Wm.
