Sentiment on Coos Bay regarding railroad construction is to the effect that the Northern Pacific will bo running trains Into this city before the Southern Pacific road between this point and Drain 13 completed. This is tho firm conviction of a num ber of men who claim to be on the InslriQ rnunrrtlnir the work of SUr- veyors w ho have been on tho coast between this point ana seaside, at tho end of tho Northern Pacific road on the coast of Oregon. "I know for a fact," said Engineer Charles Codding, this morning, at tho chamber of commerce, "that the Nor thern Pacific has had men In tho field between Sluslaw and Tillamook for the past two summers. They have been going over tho coast thoroughly looking for a good route for the extension of tho road from Seaside down tho coast to Sluslaw and to Coos Bay. "The activity shown by the Nor thern Pacific on the Oregon coast Is proof that tho assertion recently made by J. S. Dellinger, cf Astoria, that t.his company would continue Its road along tho coast, 13 correct. There 13 no doubt that when once the route has been secured tho construc tion will follow rapidly because the Northern Pacific rushes matters when onee It btarts doing things. "Meanwhile, tho Southern Pacific Is attempting to corral tho trade be tween this poit and Portland by put ting on extra boats and with consid erable success. The Czarina Is (o be put on the run with the Breakwater so as to secure all tho freight pos sible and to holS the field for this railway extension to bo completed from Drain to Coos Bay.' TO COIN NO MORE NEW TWENTIES, St, Gnudens' Design Abandoned No Return of In God Wo Trust. NEW YORK, Jan. 11. A Washing ton special to a New York paper says the last of the St. Gaudens ?2 0 pieces has been struck oft. Mint Director Leach said: "Wo had to change tho die after tho first 8000 were struck off. It was found that the high, rough, edge was too subject to abra sion, so wo milled the edge. Then complaints came In that tho flguro of Liberty was so high that tho coins would not stack, so we changed tho die again. "Then some ono said that if wo continued to deslgnato the dates by Roman numerals there would not bo room for them after awhile. On that wo again changed the die and put In Arabic numerals. That loft St. Gaudens' design a whole lot disfig ured. We had decided to abandon the old die entirely, but demands for the original coin became bo numerous we let it .work for a tlmfe, but no more St.. Gaudens' eolns will bo minted." "In Gpd We. Numerous enquiries are being mado for sons In this section and hardly a -week goes by that some mother does not send to Coos Bay In search of a son who was last heard of In this place. The latest Is an onauiry from Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Campbell, of Norden, Neb., who have not heard from their son Arthur D. Campbell since last September, -n-hon lir wna wnrlrlnf? fit n. local lum ber camp. The letter was received by Rev. w. It. F. Browne, ot tno juetu- odist Episcopal church: Norden, Neb., Dec. 31. 1907. "Dear Bro. We have a son away from home. He wrote us trom your city about Sept. 1st, and we answered the letter about the last of Septem ber, and the letter was returned to us uncalled for. Ho said ho was work ing in the timber. We are very anxi ous about him. We thought perhaps if anything happened to him you might know it. Ho will be 23 years old next February if he lives. His name is Arthur D. Campbell Kindly enquire every place you think It would be possiblo to get a clue as to where he Is. We would be glad to pay any expense that Is Incurred. We remain Youre truly, MR. AND MRS. J. S. CAMPBELL." This makes at least flvo enquiries for lost persons in this county within the past six weeks, and there appears to be something radically wrong somewhere. If he same number were missing from every spot in tho United States in the same length of time, nearly every citizen of tho union would bo lost Inside of a year. It Is thought that most of the men missing at this point have written to their parents, but owing to tho con dition of the mall service the an swers have been delayed or lost al together. Another feature of the missing sons; Is that In nearly every case they were lajjt heard of as working In tho log ging camps, and In that case they do not have writing desks provided for their use, and it may bo that thov, be came slack in their correspondence. BOOSTER LYON ABROAD Walter Lyon, secretory of the Marshfleld chamber of commerce, was In Myrtlo Point Tuesday inter viewing fruit growers and others in the interests of prganlzlng and tho appointment of a fruit Inspector. "I am pleased to learn," said Mr. Lyon, "that an association has boon formed hero and I hope- that all tho fruit growers of tho county will find It to their Interest to tako out member ship in your organization. We are now Intorcsted in finding a capable man for tho offlco of fruit Inspector for tho county, and would be glad to havo this section represented at tho Marshfleld meeting to co-operato In tho matter." E. V. Hawley, a grandson of Orvll Dodge of this city, is here on a visit and to look up the possibilities for electrical development in this section. Mr. Hawley Is principal of tho elec trical engineering department of the agricultural college at Corvallls. He has begun investigating tho possi bility of developing electric energy from tho Mlddlo Fork at a point about six miles south of Myrtle Point and Is confident that there Is suf ficient power going to waste there which, If put to use, would bo a great factor In the development of the val ley. Ho has been interviewing tho business men and property owners to see what encouragement would bo given to such an undertaking and has met with gratifying success here. On Tuesday he left for tho Coquille and the lower river to Interview the peo ple and if ho finds sufficient en couragement will return in the spring and further developo tho project. Ho also Intends to Interview tho people on tho Bay for tho same purpose. He Is confident that thero is power to light the various towns of Coos coun ty, furnish power for tho various in dustries and generate a current ror an electlc lino.
