IV1IEX WE IjEAKN DEAIt OLD OKEGOX. It Is a temporary misfortune for them and the state that Oregonlans do not better understand Oregon. We aro today enormously short o our possibilities In wealth-making. Until wo shall grasp an adequate con ception of these possibilities we can not come into our own in production and prosperity. We are, in short, far behind our true position through ignorance of the number and true value of our assets. Hero for illus tration, Is the country and tho world -sailing for our dairy products. Our farms and our factories are not pro ducing 2 0 per cent of the volume of tlicso products for which there is persistent and exacting demand. It is a. means by which to bring into Oregon a steady stream of gold as yellow as tho golden butter and chceso that would create it. Tho world's markets actually stand wait ing, gold in hand, and beckoning to Oregon farmers, creameries and cheese factories, to send on their products. It Is n condition almost unheard of and as remarkable as It Is true. Hero are the condensed milk factories in Washington county which huvo shipped 1000 carloads during tho year and are still 40 to SO per cent behind on orders. Tho product goes past tho doors of East ern factories of the same character and outsells tho latter In the markets $1,000,000 worth selling in a single season in a largo city: Tho Oregon cllmnto and soil produce superior milk, superior butter a superior pro duct, and tho consumer demands it. This discovery has worked a revolu tion in tho husbandry of Washington county. ' A dozen years ago there was not a hank in the county, now fhcro is half a dozen and almost uvery dairy tanner Is rich. Tho land then was worth from $30 to $40 an aicre, and now It yields from $150 to 200 an acre. Tillamook cheo30 was quoted re ctiitly In London, England, at 1 cent to 1 Vj cents abovo tho market for tlio host European product. Tweuty years ago New York and New England were selling $25,000, flOO worth of cheese per year In Eng land. They inforlorlzed tho product by making and selling tilled cheese, and now soils but $:!,000,000 worth. Here Is un;r.ralloled opportunity for Tiilnmoolc; she can supply 5 per cent of the do'iu'iul. Half a dozen years jigo Tillamcolc cheeso brought 9 cents a pound In tho California inar Jcetfc This j car California nnd other Jjuyers went to Tillamook and bought ihe cheeso pioduct us fast as it could be oiado at 15 14 cents. ' ' hi'sa jivo samples of what tho orld offers Oregonlans, If Oregon lans will realize and util'zo tho re sources with which nature has on dewed them prodigiously. Expert fi; ttnumv h. overwhelmingly nnd un jsiun.ously to tho effect that the con fj.tinim in Washington county aro duplk'atablo all over western Oro fiou. Wo shall have a superb com monwealth, and tho problem of llfo will bo easy whon wo ronlizo what we hno Oregon. l'ondloton Tri bune. roc'b vour present occupation de mand tho best that is In you or aro you frittering away" some of your talonts? I Last night I ato a sandwich j And had a bottle cold 'Twas in the new club that we sat, And merry stories told. t And, oh; when 1 had gone to sleep I A man came to my bed, And with a clpjver bright and sharp Reached out to get my head. . Then I turned over on my side But not to sleep, alas; Another demon sought to kill ! By giving laughing gas, And still another brute appeared, To strangle mo he came; He wore a coat of mail, and from His eyes shot tongues of flame. And all night long it seemed I fought I With demons bad to see; .With ugly brutes that thought It sport To try to murder me. J The very hissing of their breath Methought 1 plainly heard; And when I tried to scream for help I couldn't say a word. This morning, oh! My aching head Is throbbing and I seem To feel as thought I had undergone What really was a dream. I used to love a sandwich Before 1 came to know, That such a dainty little thing Could treat a fellow so." GEO. GOODRUM. O - They were seated in those dream land cushions at the Mllllcoma club Davo Stafford insists that it is tho cushions that aro dreamland and not tho wall paper 7"Jack" Flanagan said that Instead of playing "Solo" or billiards that club life should bo made Intellectual as well as enter taining. Ho suggested that each of thoso present try their wits at a jlnglo of poetry. "Easy, easy," remarked Dr. Straw. "Pootry Is my long suit. I would rather wrlto poetry than prescrip tions. Just to prove it what do you think of this "Tho time is hero 1 wish to state When you must write it Nineteon-elght." "That Isn't poetry," said P. A. Dovars, "that Is punk. Now poetry must possess something moro than rhymth. It must contain a thought something like this which I have Just dashed off "About this Season is just Tho time 'tis vain to regret; 'Tis awful hard to .raise tho dust Tho weather Is too wet." Byt this tlmo they wcro busy with their pencils. A little later when they adjourned to tho Gold-Io room for some clam Juice a number of scraps of paper wore found on tho iloor.
