The Oregonian of last Thursday, Janu ary 2, caused quite a shock to citi zens In this city who have been in the habit of staking their all on the infallibility of that newspaper. To be sure it was a common mistake, and its date mark of last Thursday read "December 2." . Fined by Upton. John Baker was fined $10 this "morning In Judge Up- ton.s court on the charge of dlsor- derIy conduct In the opera house last Saturday night. Ho was charged wlth slttjng unexpectedly in the lap edly greatly advertise this section of i Oregon to great advantage. , IlccejveSs New Life Boat. He has not been up slnco Monday morning a week ago but while his conditions Is serious, hopea arQ held out for hls early re ,cc.'very. Quito a number of his friends have made It a point to call upon tho marshal who Ja decidedly popular ln tWfl city, and it Is hoped t1int llo wlI1 llo ,., tn ,. mlt I as usual as soon as possible. Hoi?e'an(l Mall Lost Postmaster Curtis has received word that a pack horse, one locked mall pouch and a sack of paper mall wero lost at the Brewster grade on the road between Roseburg and Sumner while yester day's mall was being brought to this city. The horse stumbled in some manner and fell over a cliff Into tin river with the pack of mall on its back, and It is doubtful If the mall will over bo recovered. Berwick Preparing to Depart Tho gasoline schooner Berwick, which has been here for several days from Wed derburn, loaded oil at Dow's ware house today preparatory to taking her departure back to the Roguo River. The boat has four tons of flsh eggs ln her hold for R. D. Humo, besides a largo amount of other freight for Port Orford and Wedder burn. Captain Jacobson and his crow wero ashoro this morning pay ing a visit to friends beforo leaving the harbor. j Boats Being Fixed Up. Tho men ,xvho make their living by operating 1 launches on tho bays and rlvers.aro j beginning to prepnro for a largo busl- 1 ness with the opening of spring. Both tho Tlmmerman and Holland boat building plants havo a largo number of tho smnll craft on tho ways for repairs and Improvements, Orders for now boats nro also pouring ln and appearances nt prosant aro I that tho water fro'nt will havo more ! craft than formorly. Pleasure launoh- js tiro also being fixed "up for use. Greeks Arc Leaving. Nearly every boat from this port Is carrying from five to ten Greeks from this locality. Most of them are bound for home, and while the reason Is supposed to be the prospects of a conflict between Turkey and Greece, tho real reason Is said to be that they cannot stand a cut in wages like the native American. Having once se cured a good sum as a dally stipend, It Is claimed that they will refuse to work for less, and that tho result Is a number of them ln all parts of the country are bound for home with the wages earned during the past few years of their stay In this country. Prepare for June Election. Prep arations are already being made for the county election next June. On and after today voters may register for the county election and J. T. Hall has secured a large number of blanks which may be had by applying at his office. There will be three pre cincts In Marshfleld In the next election, and the county judge was busy yesterday laying out the divid ing lines. Formerly there were two, North and South Marshfleld. The extra one will probably compose South Marshfleld and Railroad addi tion. Fined By Knngnroo Court. News has leaked out In this city that Mana ger Nicholson, of the cold storage plantN and Attorney Farrln, were tho victims of a "kangaroo court" in Co qullle last Thursday night. Tho Victims were pounced upon while, eating dinner In the Tupper hotel and taken to a room above the Mary land club for trial. Mr. Becket acted as judge upon thisroccasion and each victim was fined $2.50 and costs on tho charge of "shooting without a license." The victims had to pay up to the mock court before they would be released, much to the amusement and gratification of tho "court." Stepped on Bud's Foot Bud Ho' land went to the show on Friday night and took chances with a ten der foot which has caused him con siderable Inconvenience. While com ing out of the opera house, he as serts that the biggest man present tramped heavily on his foot, causing him some annoyance and pain. At Saturday night's performance he selected a seat near the aisle so as to save a repetition of the tramping act. He says the stoutest woman ho had seen In a long while came along shortly afterward and put her whole weight on the tender foot, and ho is thinking of securing a cast Iron suit in which to see the next per formance. Unable (o Attend. Owing to the recent storms, which have made the roads in a bad condition, Commis sioner Carson, of the Third District of Grants Pass, was unable to attend the- fruit men's meeting In the chamber of commerce last Friday. He sent a letter regretting his In ability to bo present, but signified his willingness to bo pres ent at the next meeting held. A formal Invitation has been sent tho commissioner and when he Is tjL-ijQ bo present, CJialrman Coffelt.fPPSTTB Coos County Fruit Growers' Associa tion will issue a call for a special meeting to hear what Mr. Carson, has to say regarding the appoint ment of a fruit Inspector. Making City Map. In compliance witn tho decision made at a recent meeting of tho city council, Engineer Sandberg left for Coqullle Saturday to make tracings of all tho original townsltes ln the city limits of Marsh fleld. Ho will then prepare a com prehensive and 'correct map of tho entire city. For a number of years tho city map has been only approx imately correct, and as a result of tho engineer's work It Is expected that tho city council will have a per fect map of all parts of tho city, In cluding the numerous additions that have been mado to tho municipality during tho past few years. Mr. Sand berg will probably spend a week ln Coqulllo going over tho original maps at the county court house. Newcomers Aro Growing. The number of new arrivals ln the city during tho past few days has com menced to grow to tho proportions attained early in tho fall. Every boat Is bringing a large number of visitors from all parts of the country, and It Is expected that boforo spring Is hero there will bo a rush to this section which will surpass all pre vious rccordB. Tho fanio of Coos Bay has commenced to spread In a manner which nothing will stop. What has been started In tho way of publicity during tho past six months will undoubtedly be felt for years to come, and during that tlmo the city and county will have easily doubled Its present population. Most of tho now comers aro hero for Investment, while there- aro a few people among thorn looking for work. Subscrlbo for Tho Tlinos. r
