i n,Cm THE DAILY COOS BAY TIMES, MARSHFIELD, OREGON, TUESDAY. AUGUST 27, 1907. I BIG PUNS FOR THE REGATTA Keen Rivalry a Feature of In ternational Efforts to Select Teams. Astoria, Or., Aug. 23. Interna tional contests will be seen at the Astoria regatta and county fair, the Norwegian saengerfest and the an nual outing of the State Editorial Association. Six nationalities are to be represented by six tug-o-war v teams, and the keenest rivalry Is be ing aroused as to which nation sends America her strongest and hardiest men. It Is only the cosmopolitan popu lation of Astoria that enables this feature to be put on as a big draw ing card for this celebratioit. The teams are practicing three times a week and at the tests the brawniest men In Oregon may be seen strain ing every nerve in order to be at their best for the big events on Sep tember 2. Dozens of other races for outside people have been arranged on the water and on the land with big money or trophy prizes, as desired. Every city or town has its sprinters and its jumpers, and the events will be oppn to them in the amateur or professional class, just as they may wish, in order for them to remain amateurs or professionals. Three-legged, sack, potato and ev ery style of lace which has ever been held will be held at the regatta sports In Astoria on Labor Day. Similar to the manner in which an Eastern nlan walked from Cincinnati to New Orleans on the waters of the Mississippi river last year, a man has been secured who will walk around on the water in the harbor In front of the grandstand erected at the foot of Eleventh street. This spectacular feature of the regatta sports will amaze nil beholders. A youth of Astoria has volunteered to be thrown to the bottom of the river tied to an anchor, from which he will cut himself loose and arise to the top, barring accident. He has begged the Chamber of Commerce to allow him to accomplish this feat, and this gives some idea of the en thusiasm for the celebration in As toria. The Norwegian saengerfest of the Northwest, which is held in Astoria from August 30 to September 2, in conjunction with the regatta and county fair and the annual outing of the State Editorial Association, will be the most important held by that body in the history of the West. Three hundred voices from over a dozen of the leading cities In Ore gon, Washington and California will engage in competition. All the voices are trained and have been selected from a large number by Professor Speratl, who is drilling them every day and will do so from the present time until the opening of the big celebration. The competition will take place in the Astoria theater, and only a limited number will be able to hear them. At an onormous expense, Madame Norelli, the famous singer; Dr. En na, the pianist, and other noted ar tists of world-wide reputation have been secured for the program. Num erous other intei estlng features have been provided by the Saengerfest, notably the Viking ship and king pageantry. Business Directory Doctors. E. E. STRAW, M. D.
