Cage submarlno torpedo boat was go ing to dash Itsolf to pieces. But tho man at tho switchboard In tho gallery touched another button. The metal lic cylinder veered quickly to tho rlcht. at another touch turned to tho left 'and swung .neatly around tho pool. 1 Then a strango thing happened. The craft paused for ono second In its swift darting.. -the, man at tho 'switchboard touched another button, thero was a great whirling of water, a few bubbles, and tho surface of tho pool was still oyer tho spot where ,ho boat had disappeared. Far down in the water those with keen enough sight could make out the vague out line of the white painted man-made fish. It was lylns quietly on tho bot tom. ' , ." . Tho slightest touch .of a switch brought the, outline Into' relief, as the boat came to within two feet of the surface and lay still. Then at that depth the odd creation swam quickly around the pole again, darted out of the water for a second time and dis .appcaied as before. There seemed to bo nothing that a fish could do that this craft could not. .Indeed, it 4did more than a fish coulil do. They steered It to the eilge of tho pool and men added leaden weights to the iho board to overcomo the buoyancy. They let it sink of Its own weight to the bottom of tho pool. Tho man at the switchboard turned another switch, bubbles betokened tho strug gle that was going on at tho bottom, and In a few seconds the sturdy ma chine bore bravoly to the surface, bearing with it the leaden ballast. They made the boat spin about on its own axis like a submerged top. They made it dart, stop suddenly, re treat, veer to tho left and right, plungo instantly out of sight, run like n mountain trout under water and leap to the surface. Tho spectators could seo all this. Tho boat had boon painted white especially to en able it to be' seen through tho water. Had It been painted black or a dark, water-colored brown, tho exhibition would have been almost weird. The strangest feature of all Is tho fact that this, boat, which actually did all tho 'feats that the navy department at Washington has declared to be impossible under ex isting conditions, has been made In the heart of what easterners still love to call tho Great American des ert and made by a Denver boy, the son of a Methodist preacher, a boy who conceived tho general plan of his Invention when only 14 years old, and who has brought it to working perfection at tho ago of 21. Professor Robert Casey, tho pro moter and business manager for tho inventor, drew up recently a list of 12 things which this boat can do and which cannot bo done by any other boat in tho world. Yet each of them was dono beforo a crowd of Invited guests at the natatorlum. Tho list of feats was published as a prospectus. It is now a list of feats actually accomplished by a miniature model of tho boat. 1. It will submerge instantly on level keel, without diving or plung ing, and will follow a perpendicular lino to any given depth. 2. It can descend, halt and re main stationary on level keel at any required depth In the water. 3. It can ballast so as to sink to tho sea-floor, and, remain there CO hours, If necessary. 4. While so submerged, it can rlso to the surface at any time at the will of tho operator, and that.without discharging ballast. 5. It can lift several tons from tho scafloor over and -above its1, own buoyancy, rising to tho surface. ' C. It can turn in cither direction on its vertical axis. T 7. Lxcopt when purposely- bal lasted to remain upon the sea-lloor, it maintains a constant buoyancy, which, in case of accident to its ma chinery, will cause the boat to come to the surface. 8t Whllo submerged and station ary in the water it can discharge a torpedo and Instantly compensate for tho lost weight without taking in ad ditional ballast 'or by doing so if the operator desires it. 9. It .discards storage batteries and has instead a perpotual motive enorgy of 700-horse power. 10. It can double (and It is be lieved can triple) the speed of any known boat, whether while sub merged or upon tho surface. 11. When put into full action it will have a life of 00 hours before Its fuol will have to be renewed. 12. It can bo operated by one man and for its most efficient work will requiro a crew of but five men. It is stated confidently by Mr. Cago, tho inventor, and by Professor Casey, tho promoter, that the com pleted nnd full-sized boat will be able to cross tho Atlantic without a pause and at a rato faster than that of any fighting ship. Tho boat car ries air enough to last a crew of five men CO hours under water if neces sary, but it is not conceivable that such a necessity could ever arise. It Is to be run by electric motors generating their own current in the boat itsolf by means of a gasoline en gine which will work under water just as well as on tho surface. Tho now features of tho boat de pend lnrgoly upon tho propelling sys tem which has beoh invented by Mr. Cage. Eight separate propollors, each controlled by a switch, in the conning towor of tho boat, hro the Instruments which give It Its flsh-llke agility In the water. There nre two horizontal propcllois at each end, one set driving tho boat forward, the other reversing Its horizontal pro gress. By running the right-hand propellor in the bow simultaneously with tho loft-hnnd propellor In the stern, the boat can be mado to turn upon Its axis, and It Is by the proper manipulation of these propol lors, separately and in combination, that tho steering is dono without a rudder. Then thero are four other propel lors to run the submerging dovlco. This scheme is absolutely now. At each end of the boat Is a round "well" in which work twb propellors In opposite directions. Tho shaft revolution of these drag the boat in stantly and with level keel to the bottom. By reversing tho motion tho boat comes just as speedily to the top, draggig with it heavy weights if necessary. This feature may make the boat usoful for commer cial purposes. OITicer Carter was called Thursday night nbout three o'clock to a house on tho corner of Third and Second streets to care for a drunken woman. Tho house is owned by a local China man and is occupied by two colored women. Ono of these women made the complaint and asked that the woman bo removed. Mr. Carter found the woman against whom the complaint was entered to bo Mrs. A. Egenoff, who lives in North Bend or In tho vicinity of that city. She had been boisterously drunk nnd was still In this condition when Carter arrived on tho scene. No one seemed to care about offering any Information as to where tho refresh ments came from which had such a distressing effect upon tho victim. Mrs. Egenoff is of Indian descent and consequently, is not supposed to know where to obtain inebriating liquids. She was taken to the cala booso by Carter and Nlghtwatchman Condron, where sho remained until morning, and when sobered, was turned loose on deposit of a seven dollar ball by a male friend.
