THE DAILY COOS' BAY TIMES, MARSHHELPrbREGON, SUNDAY, i "' . .mi I'.' in y. i -'M '" ' - JULY 21, 1907, i W. W 1 PENS EPISTLE Former Coos Bay Newspaper Man Writes From In sane Asylum. TREATMENT AN OUTRAGE Soybi He Was Never In Sounder . Mental Condition -During His Lifetime. Te following letter is from the pen of George Wallace Williams, well known around Coos Day and vicinity, and who was recently taken In cus tody at Bandon and adjudged insane: Salem, Ore., July 15, 1907. My Dear Friend: Your letter of the 9th was the first that I received since leaving Marshfield. For some reason they had mo arrested at Ban don, July 5th, and thrown into the U. S. prison, which haB a oeautiful View of the jetty and light house, from there I was taken the next day to Coquille. How long I was there I 'do not know exactly as the strain of false imprisonment was beginning to ell on mo. 1 was taken before Pro bate Judge Hall and given what they called a trial. I was refused, the only witness I asked Mr. Orville JJodge, editor of the Cpquillo galley Sentinel, who is my personal friend,, and knows my case exactly. By cer tain physicians' testimony, I am told, that I was atljudsed insane; which '.s an outrage, for I never was of sound er mind in my life. I may have ap peared Insane to -those who did- not undo, stand me. Tho Sacred Scripture-, sayj "A fool' uttereth all his thoughts." A modern adage has it: "Slloaco is goldon." The vorst that my enemies could say of me was 'that I was a fool. Two guards called to take mo to Salem. They proved true friends; Major Richard Young and Gen. H. II. Horman. Had thoy left me at the Bridge where tho hotel has a better table of plain food and berries than tho Waldorf-Astoria, or at Fitz Hugh's country homo, I would be complotely restored by thin time. Tho Superintendent of the State homo is one of tho kindest men I liavo met, but tho table shocks tho nerves of a sensitive person who found his sister Mary's cooking much better than that of the Hotel Port land. ' A thousand thanks for friends greeting and sympathy. I prize your letter rcoro tl.an I can cvor tell you. Yours truly, Geo. Wallaco Williams.
