THURSDAY JAN. 12, 191 1 Council Acquits the City Marshal A meeting of Inquiry was held by the Madras City Council Tuesday evening to conduct an investigation of the com plaint filed against City Marshal F. M. Loveland for striking and beating A. J. Weston over the head Jan. 4. The complaint follows: "That P. M. Loveland, City Marshal of Madras, said county and state, then and there being, did exceed his author ity as such City Marshal by striking and beating about the head and face of one A. J. Weston with a police man's club and thereby exceeded his authority and conducted himself in a manner unbecoming an officer of the City. The prosecution was conducted by J. H. Parkley and the defense was rep resented by E. Bergland. A number of witnesses both for the investigation and defense were exam ined and upon conclusion of the testi mony Councilman Tucker moved, sec onded by Councilman Gray, that the matter under inquiry be decided by ballot; the motion earned. By ballot the council unanimously acquitted City Marshal Loveland. Motion was made and seconded that R M. Loveland be reinstated as City Marshal: motion carried. Motion was made and seconded that a report arid findings of the inquiry be published in the Madras Pioneer. Motion carried. Council adjourned. Central Oregon's Ideal Climate The Madras country 'would be an ideal Winter resort for the people in the east ern and central western states who are experiencing extreme cold weather and getting an unlimited amount of snow this winter. It is all diffierent here. -So far this fall and winter, the weather has been all that a person could desire. No ex treme cold or heavy snow, or unusual rainfall. A slight fall of snow came in Novem ber, but did not remain on the ground but a day or so. While the nights are chilly, and generally freezing ice about an inch thick, the days are warm and balmv. and no where can a better ell mate be found than right here in this section of Oregon. When the eastern people realize what a glorious climate we have here they will pet a quick move on themselves to reach this section. People from the eaBt who have been here on a visit thiB winter have been loud in their praise of our mild winter climate, and instead of finding the Madras District a cold, barren section in the winter time have found it in the garden spot of the coast.
