Keichen, deceased, last Tuesday, befote Comlsslnner Turner. Dr. I. Albert Combs, veterinary sur geon, who until I recently has been in the U. S. Army service, has located in Madras and has his olllcc in 'the Red Cross Drug Store. Clarence C. Ashley, who formerly re sided near Madras, but who is now located at Cottage Grove, was here several days during tbcps't week looking after business matters. Chalmers D. ISradfonl, who has a homestead m the Ashwuod country, was in Madras the latter part of the week. Mr. Dradfoid has made application to prove up on his claim. jerry C. M . lSntil win of 1'rineville was honored by the Masonic Grand lodge by being elected to the oflice of Deputy Grand Master for the state. Next year he will u idoubtedly be the Grand Master. S. D. Sid has been pegging away for over two years with only a day urtwool rot, and thought he would get his nose out of the space box and take a breath of puie air. Considerble interest is being taken in the boxing match between Kd Cuffif this city and Lee Knorr of Lamonta, which will take place inSanford's Hall next Sat urday evening. The Pioneer job oflice printed an mder of posters in Austrian an nouncing the event, a day or two ago. H. Abloaitz of The Dalles has come to Madias and will open a clothing store in the new Sweeting building which is rapidly neariug completion on the north side of Main Street The store will be conducted in the name of the Portland Clothing Co , which tins stores in The Dalles and in the Oregon metropolis. Jesse Hobson, of Portland, who is as sociated with the B. S. Cook Company in the purchase of the Wm. Steinke and Fied Davis homesteads just south ol town, has been here this week looking after matters in connection with the platting ol the property and the drilling operations which are now in progress on the land. The ten-months old son of Rev. and Mrs. G. R. Moorhead died last Thursday evening of bowel trouble. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon from the M. E Church, Rev. J. D. Lewellen, pastor from Prineville, coming here to conduct the services. The funeral was hugely at tended by sympathizing friends. Inter ment followed in the Madras cemetery. Madras moving pictuie show is now in operation in the new Sanford Building on the corner of C ind Fourth Streets. The first exhibition was given Monday evening (or the purpose of trying out the machine and Retting it in running order. E. N. A.J. Weston, the Madras nightwalch, returned las', night from a trip to St. Joseph Missouri, and was accompanied by his two sons, age 16 and 13 years respectively. Beginning tomorrow morning the four- year contract of J . H. Lockard for carry ing the mail between Madras and Culver goes into effect. Mr. I.ockard's brother, who recently came from Oklohoma, will drive the stage. Commissioner Turner has been appoint ed weathet observer for Madras and has taken charge of the instruments at this place. Application has been made to the U. S Weather Bureau by the Portland station for a set of regulation Government instruments and these will probably be supplied in a short time. I have grown alfalfa on my farm near Culver 16 years without irrigation or reseeding. The yield per acre has been from 3 to Z tons. For the past five years I have cultivated heavily in the spring with a disc har row, under which treatment the stand is improving.
