CHRISTMASmT MADRAS Christmas has come and gone hut it is safe to say that there is not a child in M ad rns or vicinity but who has a fundi remembrance of Santa Clans and whose heart but was made glad by the receipt of gifts in commcmnrtion of an event which has emanated from the "birth of the babr m the manger " Christmas was celebrated in Ma'drns by an cnlcitninment and "log cabin" at the M. IS. church, the building being filled to its iitmost capacity by the large crowd which gathered for the occasion. The exercises by the school children were well rendered nnd received the heartiest applause from tile large' audiencn It were perhaps too specific to say that any one. number on the program excelled the others, but the delivery of Koih Clark and Jennie Harper ihnws that they have latent talent in the Hue of reciting. " The Swan Song," by Miss Clara Homey, whose reciting has many time charmed Madras audiences, was delivered In a feeling manner, show ing individual interpretation nnd . ability which was delightful to hear. The delivery of presents was a happy feature to all, and from the amount al candy taken from the "log cabin," Santa Clause must have made a cache there which was inexhaustible. -- We desire to extend our sincere thanks o our many-friends who so kindly be friended us in our recent bereavement. Very tespectfully, Joseph Stuart and Wife ll"r'l' ' 1 1 mill-1- ' - 1 if i.l in J. W. Hurt ahd A. C, Snnlord and daughter, Ilene, went tp I'rlneville today oh a business visit. Elmer Kern, who was wiih II. J. Rob erts' surveying crew, spent a pottion of the holidays in Madras. THE MASQUE BALL The masquerade ball Christmas night was attended by one of the record-breaking crowds of the season, and it was away after midnight before the floor was com lortable for dancing. Trout creek, Hay creek, Lamonta, Culver and other locali ties were represented at the ball. The maskers were many and the ridiculous, sublime and grotesque were present in characteristic array. The prizes were awarded as follows! Hest sustained characters, lady Miss Nellie Farrell, lady vacquero; gentleman J. J. Haighl, George Washington; best wallzers lady, Mrs, J. U. Holler; gen tlcmnn, James Read, The judges were Mrs. R. A. Drown, Ferry Read and Don t Rca. INFANT PASSES AWAY ' The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Jo seph Stturt died last Friday night while they were visiting at the home of Terry Monroe on Trout creek. The babe was put to bed apparently in perfect health, but next morning the parents found It dead.. There was no indication of smoth ering or violent croup and it is the suppo silion that the infant was a victim of heart failure. The remains were interred in the Mad ras cemetery, Rev I D, Drown conduct ing the funeral service The bereave ment is most painful to Mr and Mrs. Smart, who feci thrir loss most bitterly. t Edward G.
