The Madras Pioneer Published every Thursday by -THE i'IONKKU IHIULISHINO CO.- 8UD80RIPTION RATC8: One jenr $u0 Six mouths 85 Tlirco months , eo AIVnTI8INO ItATKS ON APPLICATION Entered ns second class tnntter Aitenst p, 1901, at thq Postorneo nt Mndrns. Ore., Under tho Act of Congress of March 3,18711. THURSDAY - JULY 23, 1908 PLAN IS PRACTICABLE A number of people were in town But unlay from the various districts in this end of the conn ty, attending tho railroad meet ing. All of them appeared to ue heartily in favor of some plan to get. a railroad into Crook county, but the trouble seems to be to get them all to cen ter on one plan, and attempt to put that through. The plan which has been pro posed, to raise $500,000 in this bounty by subscription to the preferred stock of the company, and then bond the road for enough money to complete it, is unquestionably the mos practical plan which has been suggested. It was adopted bnly after every possible plan for securing railroad tnuispor tation had been carefulty con sidered, and it has the sanction and approval of men who are familiar with the prothotion of large enterprises. The promo ters of the plaa have no stock jobbing scheme to get through, and. the' are actuated by the same motive that prompts any other individual in this county to desire a railroad built in, only, their interest is greater because their investment in this county is greater. But, ihey canuot build the road alone, and the sooner the people of the county who want a road come to their assistance, the sooner will the success of the plan be assured. "Without that assistance the plan is cer tain of failure, and the people of Crook county will go on wait ing through another uncertain period of years for Harriman to build them a road. CAMPBELL'S MAGAZINE Sample copies of Campbell's Scientific Farmer ate being sent to a number of farmers in this county. The magazine deals almost wholly with farming in 'semi-arid regions, or districts Vhere the aunual laiufall is dt ftcient or irregular. The maga zine is edited by H. W. Camp bell, who has for a quarter of a 'century made a careful study of so-called , "dry farming," the most important item of which is "conserving the moisture and "storing it up to meet the de mands of the growing crop dur ing the season of drouth. The Scientific Parmer is published at Lincoln, Neb , the price be ing. $1 per 3'ear, and ever' farmer in this district should be :n subscriber. '"30" FOR LA ID LAW PAPER Editor Seabury of the Laid law Chronicle, announces thai 'the Chronicle is "80," which in . 'newspapei parlance means that it has reached the end. Under Mr. Seabury's management the "Chronicle made a new start sev 'eral months ago; but it was evi "dently the last struggle before 5inal dissolution. Peace to its iishes. The citizens of Medford aie he first to invoke the hew ih tall amendment to the constitu tion. Councilman 'John D. 01 Well "of that plate moved out of ie ward froth which he was fclebted without the formality of leaigning froih the "council, and holv th'e recall has beeh in voked in brdei- to -oust him out yrtte'oicft The open season for buck deer began on the Ifith of this munth and the mountains are paid to be filled with hunters for big game. Tho open heason for doe will not begin until Sep tember 1, but it is questionable whether any hunter at this sea son who sees a deer will hold his lire because of the sex of the game. The season for both sexes of deer closes November 1. "Near beer" is the latest sub stitute for the real thing, and it is becoming a popular beverage in dry communities. It looks like beer and tastes like it, too, but is said to be as jnglesa as a glass of buttermilk. I sell for cash only, or Us equiva lent. A. O. Sauford, Madras. ISOLATED TRACT.
