NEW ELECTRIC LINES Checker Willamette Valley With Branches and Feeders. BANKER ROsS CONVICTED. BUILD 301 MILES OF NEW ROAD Capitalization of Oregon Electric In creased to S 10,000,000 to Carry on tne Woi k. Portland, April 23. To gridiron tho Willamette Valley with electric lines is the avowed purpose of the Oregon Electric Hallway Company. The original capitalization of $2, 500,000 was Increased yesterday to 510,000,000. Extensions to the sys tem were authorized aggregating 301 miles. Work will be commenced on the first of these lines this morning. Stockholders and directors of tho company met in tho headquarters in tho Corbett building yesterday morn ing and authorized the filing of new articles of incorporation. The following now lines were au thorized by the directors of the com pany at yesterday's meeting: Salem to Albany, IS miles; Garden Home to Hlllsboro, 12 miles; Hlllsboro to Tillamook, 57 miles; Tlgardvllle to Eugene, 125 miles; Salem to Mill City, 54 miles, and Albany to Cas cadia, 35 miles. Total mileage, 301. "With tho 50 miles already construct ed by tho company between Portland and Salem, the construction of the new lines just authorized will give tho Oregon Electric 351 miles of standard gauge railroad In the state. William S. Barstow & Co., the en gineering firm which builds the lines of the Oregon Electric, has assem bled construction materials and will begin W'ork this morning on the Gar den Home-Hillsboro line. Upon its completion, attention will be turned to building from Salem to Albany. It is likely that at least three years will bo required to complete tho sys tem of new lines mapped out by the stockholders and directors of the company at yeslerday's meetings. All tho now lines planned will be uniform with the Portland-Salem line, which is standard steam rail road construction throughout. Moffatt & White, 5 Nassau street, New York city, are managers of the syndicate that is supphing the capi tal for the Oregon Electric opera tions in this state. The executive Guilty of Appropriating Stato Money to Private Use. Salem, Ore., April 24. Guilty of convortlnre to his own uso S2SS.non of state school tjnds, wna the verdict rendered against J. Thorburn Ross by a Marlon county Jury yesterday afternoon. Tho jury was out nn hour and ten minutes. From what can bo learned it ap pears that the Jury took four ballots tho first showing nlno for conviction and three for acquittal. Sentence will bo imposed by Judge Durnett on Monday morning. The penalty provided by law Is impris onment in the penitentiary for from one to fifteen years and by fine of double the amount of tho defalca tion. The case will, of course, bo ap pealed to tho supremo court, when tho case will be tried practically anew, for the defense objected to nearly all the evidence, saved excep tions, and questioned the ruling of the trial court on all points of law that go to tho foundation of tho case. Attorney McCamant declined to discuss the verdict, but was very plainly deeply disappointed. lunumjU IN M ft OREGON STATE ITEMS OF INTEREST LA UHANDc HAloho Sd.CJUO. MUST SPKAY ORCnARDS.
