Ore. under tho Act of Congress bf March 1879, THURSDAY Mar. if), 1 90S jN REPLY TO MR. BLANQHAR.D Mr. Blanchard has 6ent us a Jetter for publication. We have 110 desire to be unfair to turn, and very gladly give hiui space for his communication, reserv ing the right, however, to de fond ourselves from the impu tation of unfairness in our for mer editorial comment ou the pounty judgeship. Mr. Blanch ard's letter, taken alone, makes a very plausible story, but Viewed in the light of the facts hat brought about his candi dacy the inconsistencies of some of his statenients are ,at puce apparent. Joy. a very ingenious geo graphical division of the county he seeks to make it appear that his candidacy was iuduced by the desire to give this end of the county representation on t"he count7 board, when as a matter of fact, by his own ad missions, the subject of his .Candidacy for county judge was first broached by the Prineville people. Does Mr. JBlauchard expect any person in this end of the county to believe that their anxiety to have him ruu forjudge was in the interest of the Madras .country? There was unquestionably ''geography" in his candidacy, but it rests in this; The Prine ville politicians who persuaded him to quit the race for school superintendent and enter the race for county judge expected through his candidacy to cause H split in the solid vote on the west side of the county, and thereb' defeat Mr. Ellis. There was more politics than geogra phy in it. The intimation iiy the letter, that unless' Mr. Blanchard is elected judge this section will have no repiesentatiou, is unfair to Mr. Ellis. This end of the .county will be represented on the board by Mr. Rice of Haj'creek, to whose candidacy for com missioner there- is no opposi tion. As to the count' judge ship, Mr. Ellis repeatedly said that he did not desire to enter the race if this section had a man for the place, and it was only after this end of the county failed to advance a candidate for judge that he consented to make the race. At that time Mr. Blanchard was soliciting support throughout the county for superintendent of schools. His name had aiever been mentioned in con nection with the judgeship, and was not until his candidacy was launched at Prineville. He cannot deny that he felt no anxiety about this district's representation on the 11 .mnoiilup Mm I'fitntrxl above. Still I refused. lUt when it became apparent that tno T T I- . . 1 ' , , . . . peoplo from Lamonta, Culver an in person aim let 11 db Known ,10r;10 pfccinct (Etcher) were desirous mat lie intended to switcn to that l ecmo out for county judge, 1 the race for judge.
