Bend Dr. Uoe's caudidaoy is meeting with much encouragement from different eeotions of the district, and in this county where he is especially well known, he is sure to poll a heavy vqte at the primaries. Iehman, candidate for the republican nomination for county superintendent o f schools, was a vigitqr in Madras ast Thursday and Friday. Meeting the voters of this pre cinct. He says that his candi dacy is in the interest of no faction or locality of the county and that if he is nominated and elected to the office, he expects o use his best efforts to ad vance the educational interests of all sections of the county alike, lie has the strong en dorsement of his .friends throughout the county for the office he is seeking. ,aud Eastern Washington, for the reason that the farmers of those sections are onljr farming half of their land each year under the summer-fallow plan. The method which is being advocated is that of rotation of crops, corn being the principal crop advocated for the ''summer fallow crop." It is claimed that by this method of rotation in -crops, not only is a crop insured to the farmer each year on all his land, but it prevents the loss- of fertility by returning to -the soil those properties of the soil which would become ex hausted by the continued growing of wheat oay. The most successful farmers of this immediate section advo cate summer-fallow, and their j advice is generally accepted as fiound. As compared with the plan of cropping the same land tq wheat every year, the advice j unquestionably is sound, but the experience of the older j wheat section of the West stable of the precinct. Mr. Mayes has been constable of the precinct for several years Judge Brooks was justice of the peace in this precinct for two 3'ears, but was defeated two years ago by John A. Isham, who was succeeded by M. U. Mason by appointment at the time of Mr. Isham's death. Neither Mr. Mayes nor Judge Brooks has any opposition up to this time. It appears that Umatilla county has old moldy straw stacks. An epidemic is now raciner amoner the horses of Henry Hill, on Starkey Prairie.
