The KoyaJ Neighbor lodne hcrj Ravt;
a pleasant party list Thursday evening.
A nice crowd was present. In the guess
lug game Howard Turner received the
prize and A. C. Sanford awarded the
booby'' pne. A portion of the evening
was spent in dancing, and a delicious
luncheon was served.
John W. Robinson, a merchant from
Ashwood, was in town op Friday last,
taking Ills first look nt the coming metrop-,
olis of Crook county. He was very much
pleased with the appearance ol Madras,
and predicts a rapid and steady growth
for a fowri surrounded by so productive a
territory As adjoins Madras on all sides.
It was rumored here that Mr. Robinson
is contemplating the opening o a store
ut this place, nthdugh this rumor was not
confirmed by him.
J. IS, Cartwiight, a prominent sheep
map, from Cross Keys, was in Madras
yesterday. He says that prices for yearl
ing sheep are 75 cents per hrad higher
titan (hey were last year at this time, while
the prospects arc that wofll will sell for
from 5 to .) cents per poqnd higher prices
that last year's price. Mr. Cartwiight.
recently had nn offer of $10 per head for
1 000 bred ewes, to be selected from the
band by the purch.-npr, which, offer he rp
fused. This is .undoubtedly the highest
piice ever offered in this state for langc
Willis W, Drown has opened up .1 road
along the automobile line, running through
the north end of the I.ylc Si Drown ranch,
by putting in gates, and hereafter I ho
trr.vcl will be able to go that way and
s:tvc about two and' n half miles in the (lis
tance between this place and Cross Keys
and points beyond. At the point where
1 lie road turned to the right to go through
hc Lyle & Drown home ranch by Hcis
ler, there Is now also n road which turns
m the left, avoiding Hosier altogether.
I bis will be .1 great convenience to the
traveling public, who will be grateful to
Mr. Drown for opening up the new road.
The new telephone line, which is to
connect the Madias office with the long
(Iistaiic6 line nt Haycieek, is being com
pletcd, and will he ready for service with
in n few days. The wire is being strung
now. The new line connects with the
long distance line within a distance of iz
utiles, nnd will be used nhnost entirely for
tlio long distance seivice, as there ate
Very few local phones on it. The service
will no dolibt be very much better than
1 hat over the line which connects with
Piineville, and the better service will be
appreciated by the patrons of the ollce
at this place. . T.he new line Is owned by
Jack Sommers of Piineville.

Oregonian: A curious survival o
superstition is the Use of a "wand'' of
witch haiej or other wood, to locate metals,
water, and petroleum and almost any
thing else one hopes to find underground.
The practice is as unreasonable as pos
sible, but it has led to unaccountable dis
coveries for centuries, and still prevails all
over the civilized world. The latest in
stance of it is the use of a witch wand by
Mr. Lamphcar of Anacortes, Washington,
to trace 'a river of oil 800 feet under the
ground and some 60 miles long.
