THE ISEV SENATOR, John M. Gjearin of Poriland. who has been appointed by Governor Chamberlain to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator John EL. litchell. is without doubt the ablest man in his party in this state, and in addition possesses a strong personality and a force of qhar acter which have made him ap pointment deservedly popular among Oregonians of every par ty. Although a life-long Demo crat, Mr. Qearjn las never be longed to that wing of the party which placed party success aboye principle, and on many of the great national issues of $he day he will be found Wore in lne wth the conservative .element of the Republican party thn with the radicals n his flwn party. Mr. Gearin was a member of the law firm of Dolph, Mallofy, Simon and Gearin, which frm has already given to the state of Qregon four United States senators. As a trial law yer, M.r. Gearin has fey equals jn. the state. .Mail contract not let. No satisfactory bids were re-r .qeived for service on Route No. 73300, from Heisler to Madras, jmder the general advertisement ,of Sejptember 15, 19Q5, and the post office department has now issued a bulletin advertisement ,br new bids for the pontract on this rotate, for servipe from. July j, 19Q6, to June 3.Q, IfllQ. This route, No, 73.3Q6, from Jleisler to Madras, a distance of eighteen miles, was created this Pall, and it is therefore a new .servipe, 1q bid undr the adr .vertispment will be considered .unless submitted by a person who resides on or contiguous to the route. All bids under the 4iew advertisement must be in the hands of the Second Assint-s .ant Postmaster General not jater than January 17, 1908. -?- Recently the work of install ing the hydraulic rani for Mr. Morris at Trail Crossing was .finished and two minutes after starting it up the water had tra versed the 370 feet of inch dis charge pipe and began to flow .out upon the hitherto barren .desert. A number of spectators and prospective ram users were present and witnessed the start ing up of the plant, The ma chine was operated for a short .time only, some large leaks in ithe flume and intake tank hav ing shown up, which somewhat reduced the amount of drive head from the normal. When these repairs are accomplished, Mr. Morris will opreate the ram permanently for the winter irri gation. It may oe oi interest io note that this is the largest ram built and successfully oper ated, although Mr. Hesse, who installed the plant, says that his company is prepared tocon Htnict these machines in size re quiring a drive pipe of 48 inches in diameter. Such a ram would have a capacity of approximate ly nine times that of the one hero described. uena jsuueun. Mis. Ralph A. In ordinar years the water lies about 1 5 feet below the surlace and is there in inexhaustible quantities, but this year the wells have all had to be extended downwards 10 or 12 feet, and even then some of them, have hardly afforded enough water to sup ply the ranchers. This well of Mr. Love land's 'will supply the deficiency, and as he will erect a large tank, all the farmers need do will be to drive up to the tank, turn on the faucet and watch her fill up. C F. Smith ol Prineville, one of the largest owners of real estate in this coun ty", was a visitor in Madras yesterday. He was accompanied by Mrs. Smith. They have been visiting in the Lamonta neighborhood, where a large amount of Mr. Smith's holdings are situated, and came on down to visit this place and look after business matters.
