Sotoo time ago, in company with I he Her. Father Hickey. we had a very pleasant trip through the interior. On this journey we visited Culver, where we were royally enter tained by Mr. and Mrs. Perry Head, who were just finishing a new hotel of-good dimensions, and which with Mr. Head's management is drawing a large patronage. Culver is situated in the cenire&gf a splendid farming comlfiflpty, supports a good general merchandise store, owned and managed by O. G. Collver, who by his thrift, in dustry and lin insight into business is buiMng up a profit able "trade. , t From- Culver we traveled to Gline Falls, wliere we were met by that prince of hosts Hon. C. A. Devens, manager of the Gline Falls Townsife Company. "We stayed all night here and spent the evening and early morning in viewing the falls and other matters bf interest: From the falls can be secured sufficient power to run rail roads, flouring, iijills, saw mills and many enterprises ioo num erous to mention that will some time be located hpre. The grain, yegetables and alfalfa grown on the Cline Falls farm and yi'pinity "will convince the most skeptical that such tilings can be grown 'Throughout this region with success; . . : From jjiine Falls we jour neyed over a splendid counny, covered now with sage brush, soon to be covered with alfalfa and grain fields, to Bend, the now famous cirj'. We consider 33end the most progressive city of its size on the Pacific Coast. Its resources are wonderful and it is only a question of a short time until Bund will be known as the wealthiest city in the Inland Empire. .This can" be accomplished only through its business men, but for enter prise, business foresight 'and publio spiritedness they precer tainly all that could be asked. From Bend we traveled leis urely across country to Prine ville, which is enjoying a steady growth. The High school and Presbyterian church built there this year is indicative of a for ward movement; a new bank is importance are constantly being erected. From PrinevMo wo drove to ;.Madms, nnd after becoming ac quainted with a good deal of the country to the south and iast of uf?, wo art) well satisfied t& cast our lot in tho latter city. While tho different irrigation projects and capital .behind them will undoubtedly niake a wmiitnrfnl. rAmitrv nf Mim I or pi- ..oeToijsu iSl tm'y i,orth of end UKl south of 2fi' Urookeu river, yet we are ot mo opinion that Madras and vicin. ity will make a greater develop ment on less capital than any country we have yet been priv- ilegod to visit. The Times-Mountaineer, pub lished by J. A. Douthit at The Dalles, has suspended publica tion, for the reason, as the owner briefly says, '"That the friends of the paper have not only failed to give it proper support but have also failed to pay for that which they have received." This is to be re- rrroftort fni' nr Imtrpr lwinrroil rr more liberal minded man than Johnnie Douthit ever pushed a pen. Nothing was too good for his friends, and nearly every one in The Dalles and surround ing country "claimed" to be his friend, but, alas, in some in stances human friendship ap pears to be unstable, and this is more apparent when it con cerns the average newspaper, The editor may use every en deavor to publish his paper on strictly business principles, but unless the reading public rally to his support his effort is vain. It takes cash to run a newg paper and lots of it. Wptts JVIafrble and THE DALLES, - - - - OREGON, Jos. T. Peters Mi .We are now at home in The Pioneer building on the corner of Sixth and D streets, where our friends are invited to call and see ns whenever possible.
