of In-day a notice of the death of Mr. Brooks,
of Bilverton. Mr. Ilrooks was not a resident of
Hilvertou, but livid about four mile brljw ,
here near the I'udditiR river. From the best ,
information that 1 can get. the facts are as fol-1
lows: Mr. Lrouk was an old man and bad
been living alone on a piece of land and cutting ;
off the brush and clearing it up for pasture.

his gun and go out and kill a grouse. About
four o'clock Lb came back past where his

liis brother had shot a grouse, concluded he
would go op to the bonne, where his brother
was. On arriving there be did not see him, but
on going out in front of the house be saw him
lying dead on the ground. It would serin that
be bad laid down with his head against a tree,
and his gun between bis legs, placing Hie muz
zle under hit chin, and with a stick in bis
band touched the trigger, causiug it to explode,

Negotiations have Iwen pendinfr for some
days between Hon. II. W. Corbitt, Henry Fail
ng, Esq., and Messrs B. Goldstuith and Joseph
Teal for the transfer or all the ri?ht, tills
to and interest in the Willamette Transporta
tion and Locks Company from the latter to
the former gentlemen. Saturday tho negotia
tions were concluded. Over a year ago the
Oregon Steam Navigation Company purchased
a controlling interest in the W. T. & L. Co,,
Mevara. Goldsmith and Teal retaining the re
mainder of the stock. Ily the conditions of
the late transfer these gentlemen have disposed
of their entire interest iu the company to
Messrs. CoiUitt and Failing, and retire
from the coporation. As near as can be ascer
tained, Messrs. Goldsmith and Teal held a little
less than one half of the stock, which will
continuo to give 0. 8. K. Co. the con
trolling interest in the new corporation. The
property owned by the Willamette Transporta
tion and Lot-Lb Ccmuuiiy includes the locks at
Oregon City, wharves, warehouse! and basin,
two large wharves and warehouses at Astoria,
aud also the following summers: Occident,
Orient, Willamette Chief, Fannie Tat ton, Cham
pion, Bonanza, Dayton, Alice, E. N. Cook and
Ocklahaina Oregonian.

It will lie remembered that some time since we
hinkd at a reunion of those who took part in
the musical and literary entertainment, given
for the benefit of the Guild of St. I'anl's church,
in this city, given about the middle of February
last. The close of the Lenten season again
brings the matter up and arrangements have
been made to have it take plsee ou Wednesday
evening next, at the residence of Mrs. Jos.
Uolman, on Court strset. It promises to be s
vory pleasant affair, and will at least show that
the ladies of the Guild appreciate the efforts of
those who so kiiidly volunteered for that occa
sion. Bpecial invitations will be issued to thote
who participated, while all who are members of
tho Guild aud their families are of course ex
pected to he proseut.

A painful, though skillful surgical operation
was performed on the wife of James Lowry, i
farmer, near Buena Vista, yesterday, by Dr,
Carpenter, assisted by I)rs. Reynolds, Richard
son, Jessup and Hall. A cancer of some years'
standisg had formed on the above lady's
breast, which rendered tho operation necessary,
and which was successfully performed at the
private boarding house of Mr. Delaney, in the
presence of several of the young students from
the University, who evinced much intelligent
watchfulness during the progress of the opera
tion. Mr. Lowry called at our office yesterday
afternoon and expressed his deep thankfulness
to the medical gentlemen for their skill and hu
manity on the occasion. We are glad to learn
from him that the patient is doing well.

and fierce storm, with a high sea running, the
U. 8. steamer Hhubrick is now lying in what we
hope, some day, to be the "Harbor of Refuge"
for this North Pacific coast. Blie is unloading
light house supplies, aud is as quiet as though

gentleman, introduced by Jones & Patterson,
from Minnesota, that 100 families would emi
grate to Oregon from one county--Wauiman
in Minnesota this summer. There is room aud
Oregon wants people more than anything else.

of tho death of Mr. John Curtis, one of our
oldest and most highly esteemed citizens, which
occurred carl; this morning, and is supposed
to have been tho result of an appoplectio fit.
The facts are as follows: Preparatory to plant
ing his garden he was taking a barrow to his
place, and in passing along by Smith's be was
observed hv Mr. M. J. Rramwell to release tho
lines and sway backward, almost back on to
tho harrow, after which he seemed to partially
revive, but only for a moment, wheu ho drop
ped the reins altogether and settled on to the
bottom of Ihe wagon bed, after which tho
horses, finding themselves free, ran about one
fourth of a mile, when they were caught. 13.

The funeral of Frank 8. Hovey took plann on
Monday, the 2d ouy of April, ou the u. ...... w
his brother, lion. A. G. Hovey, from his home
at Eugene. Everything was iu readiness for
the funeral, having bmn directed by Mr. ITo
vey, by telegraph, arid himself reaching hero
by the first train after the death. We learn
that deceased was born in the State of Now
Hampshire and came with his parents to Ohio
while about twelve yeais old, where he resided
until about five years ao, when he came to
Oregon and engaged in bnitiess with his
brother, but two years ago moving his busiuess
to Balein. B.) died in the forty-fifth year of
his ago. Geniil and gent rous, he left not an
enemy in the world, and we confidently believe
lie is rosting in peace, to w hatever country his
spirit has tuken its flight.

Sunday night Mr. Graves, proprietor of the
Commercial Hotel, in this city, had occasion
to visit the siek room of his daughter, and
missed his pants, in which were his safe keys.
Two men were on as night watch, but deny any
knowledge of the mat'er farther than tbey
were out of the room for a few moments to get
some lunch. Tlie aafu was u locked and about
fl,300 iu gold abstracted therefrom. Some

great the rubbers could not stand it. bearch
was instituted, and Monday morning, in a back
woodshed, the money was found buried in
some rubbish. No arrests made. Mr. Graves
thinks himself very fortunate in getting off so

"Is Atheism Possible?" was the theme of the
lecture ut the First Presbyterian Church, Sab
bath evening. Foundation of the remarks was
taken from the words, "The fool hath said iu
his heart there is no God." Iu the argument
the Ilev. H. P. Peck left no irround on which
the Atheist could rest the sole of his foot; no
hope on which he could rest feuiely; no le
lief on which to base even his own rational or
intellectual existence. The singing prior to
the lecture was far too short, and the choir will
do well to remember that the "song service" is
a feature appreciated by the public. The sing
ing was good, of course; but not enough of it.

We sampled and tasted, yesterday, some
apples, iu perfect preservation, pickf d from the
tree on April 1st, from an orchard in Polk
eonnty, owned by J. W Ftddler. The apples
were picked by Lewis Pettjohn, of this county.
The tree from which the apples was picked
was full of bloom for another crop. Talk
about your climate, why Oregon beats the
world fur red apples, and some other things.

Fred. McAdams, Prof. Haas, and several
others, have arrange i for a finning match on
next Saturday. All are to commence at the
same time, sitting or standing sufficiently close
together for an empire to see and hear all of
them. If any one of the party speaks for the
space of two hours he is "siuched" for refresh
ments, and the one catching the smallest num
ber of fish pays for a flue supper at Pete Em

We learn from Albany that Mr. Parker has
not succeeded in niakiDg an arrangement with
his creditors, and a strong probability of his
being thrown into bankruptcy, notwithstand
ing Mr. Parker bas offered everything that a
man could individually, yet there are other in
terests that bang off.

"Two-thirds of the members of Congress,'

Advertising is a good thing, bat when a prom
inent grocer carried to a funeral aa umbrella
on which was painted conspicuously the busi
