Dinnerx-A Shot-Gun Ar gument. Home tuna since two well d rented men called at th bouse of Mr. O. H. P. Darby, of tbia county, and requested dinner. It was long after the dinner hour, bat the oldest daughter, Miss Martha Darby, prepared them a repast, to which they helped themselves most liberally. Tbey desired to know the cost of tlie meal, and wero told that the charges were the moderate sum of twenty-five cent apiece. One of them took out a well filled purse, and turning his back to Miss Darby took out one quarter, which he banded to her, telling bar impudently that they had no more. As they started away she appealed to her father to awake then pay for their dinners a thm- enght, after putting her to tb trooble of preparing it for them. Tbe old gentleman thought it baiter to let them go, bat th girl't iadignatioa bad keea rooaed by th contemptible act, and sha sake permission to oompal them herself, which, of course, wa granted, a her father (earned te nave but little faith in her ability to do so. Taking down the loaded gun ah proosaded ta th door. The men had already mounted their hone, when th ordered them to atop aad pay for their dinners before goiag: at the nan time holding th gua cocked and aimed. -One of them would bare put tbe money on tbe fence for her, but no, she would have it iu her hand or not at all, as it wa not the paltry sum ah cared for. Warned by her manner, aud the fire in ber eye, be dis mounted and deposited tha coin in her palm while she held her weapon ready to fire, with one hand, in ease of an attempt beiug made to wreat it from ber. Tbe men rode away, and will probably not call again in a lordlv way for dinner without intending to pay for it." AtjultTel insaae. Last Tuesday, Mrs. Jas. Higgin, of Spring Valley, near Zena, Polk county, was brought before Judge Trmt, of that county, and ad judged insane by tbe Court, after due examin ation of the case. This was the must lamtata- hie and melancholy case that has ever como be fore tbe Court. Mrs. Higgins was just married last spring, and is only 20 years of age. But a few months ago, the was to all appearance as bright and intelligent as anybody. Alxmt two months ago it was noticed that' her memory was failing her and she soon became very listless. She has attempted several times to commit suicide, bat was always prevented. A few days iuce, fbe took a dose of strychnine for the purpose but failed to accomplish the desired ud. Her insanity is thought to be hereditary. as uer mother, about DO years ago, became in sane and a short time afterwards was committed to the Ohio Insaue Aiyluni. It is thought Mr. Biggins is in a hopeless wreck of mind. She is a daughter of G. W. Teller, .f Spring Valley, a respected citizen. A latjre Tree Falls from the Bank of the River on the Forward Deck of the Willamette Chief A Lucky , . Escape for Passengers, j . Officers and Crew. While th iteamer Willamette Chief was com ing down th rirer, Uaturday, when near th month of tbe LnckiamuUj, above Buena Vista, he had a remarkably narrow escape from a fear ful accident. The boat waa steaming along down at a good rate o:' speed, and was passing ear th shore, which ends in a high aud some what abrnpt bauk, when a tree about two foot thick at the butt, that bad been uprooted, fell iuto the stream. The trunk of the descending tree struck on the forward deck aud was fortu nately broken in twain, by the force of tha fall. Strange as it may appoar the damago to the boat is compariiively slight. If the boat had passed a few rods further down tbs stream when the tree struck it, the upp-r works would have been badly demolished, a number ou board inevitably killed, a possibility of tbi boat being sunk at once. As it resulted, no one was injured and the boat es?aped with trivial damage. To intimate that the accident gave all on board a precious good scare, would be but a feeble way of expressing it. No one observed the falling tree until just before it struck. Had it been seen when it first started, so little time was re quired in its descent that it would have been impossible for tbe pilot to have carried his boat beyond dinger's reach. Altogether considered, it was a providential escape to the s:eamerand to all on board. rierliou HIMl IllMltllHllUM. At a special convocation of Harrisburg Chap ter No. 13, R. A.
