A large amount of flue gmtls and fancy article will lie a dd, and the public ia expected to extend a lib eral patronasre. Time ami place will Iw an nouueed ben-aftrr. ftnrnirnl operation. Dr. L. 8. Skirt' performed a diflicnlt surgical operation yesterday, for a little daughter of Mr, Ureeo Cornelius, of Waldo Hills, she having bad several teeth knocked out and tlie anmmnd- inj bones fractured by the kick of a horse Th little girl bore the operation with heroic fortitude. From day to day the majority claimed for Mr. Lane, dwindle into insignificance, Uov. viuirjs aerenry aoes not exhibit any new roosters at the head of ita columns, but con tent itself by saying that Lane ia elected by a "small majority." All of which ia prjbably a mistake. Tror. Iteycamo in from Bilvertor, and Or vais, last night, where he met ana instructed Urge, classes in dancing. Ha feels very much encouraged, and would lie pleased to meet tmmbr of new scholars at the Opera House to night, that being the regular meeting of bia Salem class. Col. Cooper arrived last night and report! the mountain districts largely lVmoeratic. but thinks tlie chances favor the election of Mr, Warren, good. The contest is nnsettled and if Kepublicans tnrned out as they should have dine, Mr. Warren's majority would have reached two thousand. A gentleman from Silvcrton says he took h't wife to a meeting of a Good Templar Lodge re contly, and either bad to Join or ait ont in a rain storm during the session. He chose to Join, and hi bow a member in "good standing." Thus it ia that little circumstances sometimes nape the course of individuals in after life. Art TminirN, Mrs. MePheeters while here on a visit ex eco ted two fine paintings one of Mt. Hood and anot!ierof MbRainer which have been shipped to her at MaryBvillo, California, since the paints have dried sufficiently to make the shipment safe. Both are real gems of art and will live long after the artist has passed that "bourne wlienoe no traveler returns." The earlv efforts of Sir Jiwhua Reynolds foil far below these first productions of .Vw. M.-P.. and with fur ther cultivation and practice we expect to hear of great achievements in the fine arts, of which all her friends will be proud, and the world re joice over tlie accession. liclllCK nierm Plow. Astoria and vicinity was visited on Tuesday evening by a heavy wind and raia storm, which continued aonie time and did some damage. The steamer Dixie Thompson, which was lying at the whart there, wag caught and twisted around pretty lively. A pile driver was cap aized near Truliiugcr's new wharf and the boiler and engine whic'i were on board, were precipi tated to the bottom of the river. For several days pact the U amtng Astoria has been engaged in grappling for the kist maoliinei-y and boiler, but has not aucoeeded in recovering them. The little ahamer Jane Went had a portion of her cabin blown off. Fortunately noiie of the ves sels which were lying at anchor opposite Fort Stevens were Uiraf;ed by tlie gale. I.arrw WorWInn Fore. An Indian convict in our Btat Penitentiary, by tt name of Grant, is exhibiting minimal Went in painting. Tlie farmer's warehouse at Albany came near proving a very unprofitable investment Sunday. The sills next the city split Saturday or Sunday night from the heavy pressure bearing on them from the immense bulk of grain stared in the building, and for a time it was feared th ware hoirw would go to pieces, and would have done so had not six or seven thousand bushels of grain been removed therefrom. This relieved tlie pressure from the weak part of th ware house, and saved the building from careening over, becoming a total wreck, and the grain stored therein from material damage from the raiu which wonld have rendered it nnfit for use. The building will not be repaired until all the grain In the building is removed, and that will be as soon as other places of storage can be se cured. Art Trnuartt. Nothing as completely sets off a private resi dence as the pretence of neat and tasty picture adorning, as they do, the home, and evincing taste and refinement on the part of these who thus add to the enjoyment of themselves and friends by purchasing and displaying them. Where poverty forbids the purchase of costly Dictores, wood and steel engravings are far peiinr to none at all. Where, however, people are able to afford the luxury, oil paintings and chromes are not only in place, but are rather looked for. The elegant home of I. R. Moore of this city, has recently been made even more elegant and attractive by the purchase ot a new and choice invoice of foreign and domestic chromoe, the superior of v. Inch has never been brought on this coast. Among others, we no ticed mors particularly one "Moonlight on the Kile," which is a treasure in its way, and scarca iuferior to an oil painting. Also "Madonna and child," "Beatrice" and eevrl other of like merit, making altogether a collection of whicn he may well feel proud. They were pur chased at private sale in Portland, and by con nosieurs in art pronounced the finest collection of the kind in the State. Preeinet.
