ADVOCATES RAISING BETTER HORSES W. J. Walker, a prominent citizen of Spokane. Waeh., favored the Plain dealer, with a call, yesterday. He if vice-president of the Pacific Live Stock Association, the organization which in sures live stock against death from any cause. Mr. Walker has been looking over Douglas county to see what kind of horses the farmers have and he said that he was rather dissapointed for lie found the standard was not very high. "Why, I have not discovered a really high-class, thorough bred stallion with in twenty miles of Rseburg. This seems to me to be a big mistake. The tendency of the times seems to be fur heavier or nu re sieedy horte . If pstJff farmers would onraniz a tt "kn:aus' association, they would derive great benefit from it. They can purchase hones of the beet kin 1 from McLaugh lin Bros, of Portland r fron I. C. Ruby & Co.. of Pendleton, or from other well- known breeders of fine stock. Then if twelve or fifteen of them will agree to bring, say five mares to service they will find that they will not only soon be paying all the expenses for the care and keeping, bnt soon it will become a money-making investment. These tine animals can be purchased on one, two or three years time payments, and noth ing, in bit estimation, would pay the farmers better than to do this very thing. "I notice a tendency to have improved cattle, sheep and goats, here in Doug las county," continued Mr. Walker, "but, when it comes to horses, the farmers seem to be short-sighted. Good horses always bring good prices and your farmers will make no mistake if they take hold of this matter and proceed to raise better horses." Social Circles A very pretty wedding was solemn iaed at the home of the brides sister, Mr-. V. R. Buckingham, when lrma Maud Housbeholder became the wife of the Rev. James A. Ellison, at eight o'ciock vesterday morning. The bridal party stood beneath a horse-shoe of white rosea, while Rev. C. L McChns land, of Corvallis, presiding elder of this district spoke the impressive words ot the Methodist Episcopal service The bride was charming in a dainty gown of organ dy and lace. Immediately a ter the ceremony a wedding breakfast was served in the dining room the table dec orations consisting of white ribbons and pins roses. Rev. Ellibon came from Jasper, Tennessee last January to take charge of the Methodist church, South, at Myrtle f reek. At the last conference he was transferred to the Corvallis church where he will take bis bride, after a horJeymoon trip through Wash ington and Oregon, A number useful and handsome presents attest the popu larity of the young couple ; the bride be ing a favorite in Roseburg society. (Corvallis papers please copy.) s a Saturday evening, at the Methodist Episcopal church. Rev. W. C. Reuter officiating. Mr. Harry Fruing to Miss Marie Jones, both of Douglas county, were united in marriage. At tbe same place and time and same pastor officia ting, Mr. Elvis R. Gowdy to Miss Laura L. Spalding, botn of Douglas county. Both grooms wore conventional black and 'both brides were t dressed in white ilk. Tbe church was beautifully deco rated with ivy, evergreens and cut flowers. At the appointed hour both eoopet passed down the chancel of the church, while Mrs. Kelly played the wedding march. Rev. W. C. Ret. ter stood within the chancel, as the two couples approached the altar, while t he officiating clergyman read tbe ceremony which pronounced them husband and wife. Mrs. Kehy at the organ sang softly a solo. After tbe ceremony tbe happy couples, with invited guests sat down to a sumptuous supper at the Jones' Hotel. Tbe parties received many congratulations and were reci pients of many beautiful gifts The next morning tbe couples took tbe Southern Pacific for California, where they will spend their honeymoon Guest. Tbe reception at Mrs. S. C. Flints, on tbe afternoon of Tuesday. Oct. 3rd, for the '96 M. C. C, was a delightful affair and enjoyed by about 40 ladies. Tbe rere prettily decorate 1 with carnations and potted plants. Delicious refreshments were served on the roomy porch. Tne ladies were entertained during tbe afternoon by vocal and instrumental music. Mrs. Estey, of Florida Springs. Colo., Mrt. A. Steinerand Miss Ruth Hamilton sang, while tbe instrumentalists were Mrs. J. A. Buchanan. Mrs. I. Wollenberg, Miss Lake, Miss Elite Bene lick and Mn Flint. Mrs. Flint was assisted by Mrs. F. W. Benson, Mrs L C. Aiken and Mrs. F. W. Haynes. The first business meeting of the club will be held at the residence of Mrs. W. R. Willis, Tues day, Oct. 10th, at 2 :90 p. m. It is not definitely announced that there will be this further delay, but that is the intimation which the President gave Senator Knltou today when the latter called to urge the Roseburg Land Office appointments. The Senator told the President that he and Secretary Hitchcock had agreeJ upon B. L B '.dy for Register but had t am unable to reach an understanding is to the Receiver. The President in formed Mr. Fulton that Mr. Hitchcock now ot'jects to the appointment of G. R. Hegardt as Receiver, having become convinced, after inquiry, that Mr. He gardt was not a proper man for the place. He did not state the grounds of objection. To offset this objection, Mr. Fulton handed to the President very strong let ters from the Acting Chief of Army Kn- gineers, and Major W. C. Langhtt. speaking in the highest terms of Mr. Hegardt, who for 17 years has been in direct charge of Government work at the mouth of the Columbia River under ti.e Armv Engineer Corps. The indorse ments, which are official, seemed to off set the objections raised by Mr. Hitch cock and the President kept them, promising to take the matter up with the Secretary at once. The Roseburg land office may be tak en np at the Cabinet meeting tomorrow, but unless the Attorney-General returns before then, the Judgeship will have to go over.
