Seeley. Of the 72 shot w hich struck him but one is now giving turn anv trouble the one which entered his face joet below the eye. It is thought that the eye will tie saved, however. Attorney W, W. Cardwell will go to Curry county Wednesday to attend cir cuit court ami look after the interest ol several clients in that county. District Attorney Brown will be in Portland at this time receiving treatment for defect ive hearing and Attorney Cardwell will also serve as deputy district attornev during this term of the Curry county court. Attorney Cardwell has been compelled to forego the usual summer vacation on account of the strenuous professional life he is leading. BRAKEMAN SMITH FATALLY INJURED His Leg Was Crushed at the Wood ville Siding This Morning. Died in RoseburgThis Afternoon. C. D. Smith, a young hrakeman well known in this city, received injuries by falling from a freight car while switch ing in the Woodville yards at four o'clock this morning, which caused his death in this city at '.' o'clock today. Very little is known at present of just how the accident occurred Train 226, upon which Smith was working, was switching in the Woodville yards and in some wav Smith fell and it is sup posed that the wheels of one car passed along the outside of his r gbt leg, fear fully mangling mid tearing it and caus ing a fracture of the leg below the knee. It is believed that his clothing caught ami he as dragged a considerable dis tance receiving internal injuries which caused his death. Immediately after the accident was disrovered Smith was taken to Grants Pan where he was attended by Dr. M. C. Fin ley, the Company physician at that place, and upon the arrival of the northbound local he was placed aboard to tie taken to the Portland hospital but became so weak during the trip that Dr. Kinlev derided to have him removed from the train at this station. The train arrived here at Vt 15 p. m. and .Mr. Smith was immediately taken to the Oregon rooming house where Dr. Finley and Dr. Shearer, of this city, worked with him until his deatn. The dere.-ued was alout ti years old and a resident of A.-hland where his parents reside. Stratford Now A late copy of the Kl Dorado, Kansas, Times has this about a former well known Roseburg boy. "Company K Kansas National Guard Saturday even ing unanimously elected Charles W. Stratford as Captain, vice Wan. Mc haniel, resigned. This is a promotion from First Sergeant and an honor Worthily bestowed. Stratford is a bright level headed young man. He w ill give every one a tajaara deal, lb has the regard and good will of the personnel of Company K and it will not only maintain .but increase its quality ami efficiency.
