Cortelvou. more than any other member of the Cabinet, re grets his inability to be in Portland at the time of the opening of the Lewis and Clar Exposition. Mr Cortelvou has taken a very keen interest in the enter prise of the Portland people, and had intended, up to a late day, to attend the opening exercises But an unexpected I ress of public business has arisen in the Postotfire Department, especially in view of the President's return to Wash ington, and this, coupled with a number of long-standing engagement, will make jt impossible for Mr. Cortelvou to get away at this time. "It is a very keen disappointment to me that I cannot get to Portland to at tend the opening of the Exposition," said the Postmaster-tieneral todav, "but I count upon visiting Portland later, in order that I may see the Ex position of which I have heard 'omuch." The Postmaster-tieneral has been strongly and persistently urged by Sena tor Fulton and bv Chairman Frank Biker to drop everything ia Washing ton and go to Portland, and the cordial itivitation extended by these men on be half of the people of Oregon has appealed to Mr Cortelvou. But the Postmaster -General is a man wbo follows the old rule, "business before pleasure," and : follow ing this rule, he is compelled to j forego a bat he acknowledges would be a very pleasant vacation. However, he counts upon visiting the Exposition later in the summer, and will notify Chairman Baker when be decides to make the trip. As chairmen of the Repnblician National Committee Mr. Corteiyou be came acquainted with Mr Baker during the late Presidental campaign, and the friendship then formed has been re newed on two occasions when Mr. Baker visited Washington during the winter. Facts About Japan Rice is the common food of the com mon people. Japan has very few millionaires and partically no multimillionaires. Japan has nearly 50,000,000 people, more than half a many as the United States. Sixteen cents a day is now good pay for unskilled labor in Japan. Ten years ago is was six cents. Japan bas one of the largest steamship companies in the world, with services to the United States and to England by the way of Suez. Japanese inns furnish fresh tooth brashes every morning to every guest. Tbe brash is of wood, shaped like pncil, and frayed to a tufty brush of C at the large end. The Joker in God's Acre In an old Virginia cemetery there ia a weather-beaten tombstone bearing this inscription : 'I AWAIT "Y HUSBAND May 26. 1840. Whynffer from rheumatism when one application of Chamberlain's Psin Balm will relieve the pain? The quick relief which this liniment affords makes rest and sleep possible, and that alone is worth many times its cost. Many who have used it hoping for a short re lief from suffering bsve been happily surprised to find that after awhile the relief became permanent. Mr. V H Leggett of Yum Yum, Tennessee, C 8 A writes. There is no question about its being the best, as it will cure a cough or cold in less time than any other treatment. It should always be kept in tbe house ready for instant use, for a cold can be cured in much less time when promptly treated. For sale by A C Marsters A Co. Heirs of A. 0.
