THE FARM 15 A VERY GOOD SCHOOL By Professor L. H. BAILEY. Hesd of the Agriculture Department of Cornell University kwVEN if a farm boy has never, perhaps, had much school- iwr he rises high, for THE FARM IS, AFTER ALL, OA VERY GOOD SCHOOL. A boy has to do things there for himself. If anything breaks down he doesn't need to call an expert to his assistance. He has learned to do actual things to solve a problem for himself. He knows, there fore, how to solve the next problem. And when he goes out into the world and begins his life work he takes hold of first things and readily solves them. All the time you are doing your work here you are SOLVING PROBLEMS. The old idea was to solve problems in a book. That isn't true today. All over the country they are establishing schools of agriculture. AGRICULTURE IS ITSELF AN EDUCATION WHICH TRAINS A8 WELL AS BOOKS TRAIN. THE BEST EDUCATION WHAT 18 ITT IT IS ONE WHICH PUTS YOUR HANDS AND MIND TO WORK AT THE SAME TIME. AGRICULTURE MAKES A MAN THINK FOR HIM SELF; IT MAKES HIM FIT TO TAKE UP THE PROBLEMS OF LIFE. We have lived in an era of the building of large cities. Boys have run away from farms and have built the cities. But WHO NOW IS TO FTRXISH THE CITIES WITH PRODUCTS, WITH THE THINGS WHICH GO TO MAKE UP THE THINGS IN A CITY i So people are going back to the oountry to the farms. With the proper application of science and business methods farms can be made to pay as well as other businesses. Li the country there are opportunities for almtst every one to make AN HONEST LIVING. Thi6, after all, is the life. And a school of this sort is THE REAL PLACE for you to live in. You are put in touch with real problems of life. You are learning things which are going to be of some use. Think Over These V liy are all cow paths crooked? How old must a grapevine be before it begins to bear? What wood will bear the greatest weight before breaking? Can you tell why leaven turn upside down just beford a rain? Why does a bane eat glass backward and a cow forward? Why does a hop vine wind on way and a bean vine the other? You can see any day a white horte but did you ever see a white volt? Where should a chimney be the larger at the top or bottom, and why? How many different kind of trees grow in your neighborhood ami what are they good for? Can yon tell why a horse when teth ered with a rope always unravels it while a cow always twists it into a kinky knot t Philosophy's Effect Upon Religion By Dr. F U PATTON. President of Princeton Theological Seminary kv NE who reads the aigns of the times discerns a great slump I 1 in the Christian faith, and there is needed a downright. EARNEST REVIVAL of intellectual conviction. Too much of the preaching of the present day is a mix tore of sociology and sentimentality, and instead of Christianizing society the tendency is TO SOCIALIZE CHRISTIANITY. One is asked so often whv more students in the universities do not come forward to enter the ministry. I could name at least half a dozen who came to college WITH THE INTENTION OF BE COMING PREACHERS, but before the end of their course had concluded that other fields were better for their energies. One reason for this defection is that THE PRESENT INTEL LECTUAL UNREST weighs with terrific force on the minds and conscience! of young men. They Ire not ready to give assent to ALL that is required in the church of their choice. With their attitude unsettled on philosophic questions they do not see their way clear to enter the ministry. A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF RESPONSIBILITY JUST NOW RESTS ON THE MEN WHO HOLD THE CHAIRS OF PHILOSOPHY tN THE COLLEGES OF THI8 LAND. Bachelors Are Abnormalities Br BENJAMIN IDE WHEELER, President of the University of CaltfornU TN the long run, WHAT UPHOLDS THE FAMILY WILL UPHOLD THE STATE. The state cannot exist without m the home. If the home is left out none of that solid moral fiber can exist in the nation which must come from home virtues. Good morals are nothing less than the regularities and the ordinaries of social life between morals and religion. There can be no dividing line. Good morals are a constituent part of life. INDIVIDUALISM IS DANGER TO THE 8TATE. BACHELOR8 AND CLUB MEN ARE THE BANDITS. GUERRILLAS AND OUTCASTS. I would be in favor, if it were possible to do such things by law, of A SPECIAL TAX UPON BACHELORS. They don't take part in the moral work of society. They are ABNORMALITIES, and abnormalities should pay the taxes. The unit of society and the state is the family. Beware of the doctrines which base themselves upon false conceptions of individual ism instead of the family, WHICH IS THE ONLY SOCIAL UNIT.
