Roseburgr Ore., Jan. 18, 1904. Clara Dillakd, Clerk, Dist. 4. ,N. Drake of Dads Cr eekLost'fn the Mountains. The terrible news was brought to town Tuesday night that A. X. Drake, who owns a farm on Dads creek, about nine miles west of Glendale, had been tost in the mountains near his home for two days and nights. On Monday morning he started out to hunt, tellinghis wife he would be absent until about noon. He took with him his rifie and a hatchet, saying he inten ded to cutome brush from the trails While dressing lor the trip, he took from his pockets his lobaco and matches which he unfortunatly forgot to take with him. He had about 20 rounds of aummuition. Not having returned home by duek his wife became alarmed and notified a neighbor, B. W. S. Folk, the goat raiser. Mr. Folk began a search at once for the missing man and every few minutes dur ing the night he discharged his rifle from several different peaks in the mountains, but received no reply from the lost man. On Wednesday the reighborhood was aroused oud about 20 men began a sys tematic search through the mountains where Mr. Drake was supposed to be, a dozen or more men from Glendale join ing in the hunt. Up to the hour of go ing to press, not the least trace of him has been found, and the heartbroken wife, is completely prostrated over the terrible affair. A heavy snow fell in the mountains Sundav night and all day Monday, to the depth of nearly two feet, making It inioossible to track the missing man The supposition is that he accidently shot hiniEelf, or perhaps fell over a bluff and died a horritile death in the lonely ennuwnvered mountains. In that event it is not likely the DoJy will bo found until the snow goes ff, if all. Mr. Drake, who was man of 3'i years of age, came to this section last summer ...s.i. .;., t-;r Onm Minnwiota.
