i TAB JFflOISE As soon as the colt comes into the .Trorlii see that Its nose is uncovered as Boon as the body Is exposed to the air, and there may be cases where the na vel needs attention, but nature usually takes care of that After these atten tions, says Cyrus Greene in rralrle Farmer, leave the colt vith the dam for awhile and let her take care of It, but if after two or three hours it has not had any milk help it get some. When a week old, put on a halter and tie the colt up. By the time it is two iweeks old it should have been taught to lead and stand tied while its mother Is taken out to water. I keep the mare In a box stall for a time previous to and a short time after foaling, and at soon as the colt becomes accustomed to being haltered I tie the mare in a single stall and place the colt In a stall next to It, which it soon learns to know as its own. My colts usually "greet me on enter ing the stable in the morning and are so much in the way while I am clean ing the stable and currying that I am obliged to halter them and tie them In single stalls, and they seem as proud as a boy with his first pair of pants, and here I leave them tied till after breakfast. It is right here where the better part of the coifs education comes In. I do not allow the colt to follow the mare when she is at work, and as It has learned that it cannot have Its own way it will stay shut in the barn without making much fuss. If the colt cannot be taken to the mare, I have her brought up to the barn once during the morning and afternoon for awhile and later on allow the colt to go with the mare when she is doing slow work, such as drawing hay or stacking grain. Tke Dih'i MI lie A good many fall colts are here now. Some of them will be successes, and some of them will not. The foundation of any foal's prosperity is milk. The dam must have milk enough or the foal is a failure, especially if it comes In the fa.lL Frosted grass is not enough to make a good supply of milk. Give some oats, oiZmeal and bran and give enough to produce 9 good flow of ml'k. Any one who raises his first foal on cow's milk is surprised at the quantity It will use. Most people have no idea of the mil yield of a mare, and they have no idea of the feed it takes to make milk enough to keep up the flow and the mare too. A little extra feed .will be paid for by any well bred foal which Is dropped In the fall. Fit Tketm Fr Sale. The only animal it does not pay to fit for market is the one that is too common to sell when it Is fitted. Xa tional Stockman holds that the market demands a fleshy horse. It is the sell; er's business, therefore, to make his horse fat before offering him for sale. It may not be best for the horse, but that is the buyer's demand, and it must be respected. Every El conditioned sound horse that goes to market sells for less than he Is really worth, for the buyer makes liberal allowance for the cost of putting him in shape and the suspicion that he is hard to fatten or has something wrong with him. The man who has a really good thin horse should never part with him as long as he has feed to "bring him out." In most cases he will get more for this feed than be can get for it anvwhere else The matter of educa tion in fitting for market is a different thing. Of course it pays to put a finish ed product on sale, but many men are not able to gait and manner a horse so that he will show all that is in him and they must often see the dealer make a big thing out of horses they have sold for moderate prices. But er ejry sensible man can put flesh on a horse and put him in market in proper physical condition to attract buyers. Fine Farm for Sale. A good 800 acre farm for sale five miles from Myrtle Creek, 100 acres in cultivation, balance bill, pasture and timbered land.
