IT IS THE HUNTER'S PARADISE lieor, .Moose, Caribou and Mountain Sheep Abound Some Fake AUn. ing Properties. iioMKit, AUrk, Junt 10, lS'U1. i loiter is, or was a boom tun a town oa paper. It cun hardly bu oiled even that i.o Ii wasot.e of llio tuany 8cl.en.es itiaiigurat4l to eateii tm-kerf. After goiog up Cook's Iuiet ahoiit L'.j or 30 niilea there bra tit ties otf to the ooitheast from the fat hide ol the inlet, a bay or uouml about 10 or 12 lulled Hide and about 40 miles lout;. On tie nortti ti le of this buy or BOUQd end lieur the ceuter of it, in length, is a narro ppil or toug ie cf saud and grvel, about '4 of a ni:Ie i.!o and about 4 miles long. At no place ia the surface of the ground inoro 'ban a fuot or eighteen iu ches above high tiue, and iu fact it is probable that an extremely high tide would waMi over it at aluioet any point. Oa bo'.h tiJce aud back of this Vpil" tho waters vf the hay wash a perpendic ular blutT, perhaps 100 feet high, and cropping out of this LlofT for miles on ech Eidtf of l!ic ' epi'." aie three distinct veins of coal, racing in ibicki.csj from 3 to S feet. Lirgff.qriaul'uies oi this coal is washed out by the waves and is found scattered along the beach. This coal, however, has beeu provfu by many thor ough testa to be unlit for steaming pur poses and ci a poor quality for almost any purpose, although it does fairly well in a stove cr grate. this coal was of course well known to the Russians more thau a hundred Years ago, and wits proipected and tested and abandoned by them many years ago. Since the transfer of this country to the I'uittd States, eiperts wiihout number have examined the coal and made ad verse reports in regard to it. The South ern Pacific Company, which yet burns wood on its Oregon ao-J California lints, I am informed have spent alargeanount of oior.vv to la.ke a tUoro.iih test of the coal, and foUii-J it't be uaS: for tf.eir putpoee. Andyeteytry year scej one or two uea cosnpauies formed for the develop ment cf these coal mines, la tact,, the sale of this coal property, the title to w tiich eliil remains ia the government, appears to c ms'.itule the regular business of a gang of sharpers. Since I have been here, and only a few days ago the last "run of suckers" put ia an appearance with an outfit, con sisling cf provisions, machinery and supplies, valued at more than $100,000, and announce! that they had purchased the mines and everything appertaining thereto, and that loey expected to build wharfs, coal bunkers and railroads ga lore at Homer. Io addition to the mon ey whfcb they have expended in tbe purchase of tbs coal mines from eo.ne person who never owned them, they have enrou'.e for this place property in the shape of machinery and supplies, valued at mora than $100,000. And all this without hariug made any reliable investigalioa or extminatijo of the qual ity or exteut of the oal fields, or tbe question of its transportation to a mir ket. It seems, al nost incredible that busi ness men, at loese men whom I have personally met anJ in regard to whose sanity there dx-s no: appear to be much doubt, should permit themselves to bs drawn into such schemes. As a town cite Home is the most dea lato and nnsuicablo that could be i rad ioed, h's only advantage beiux tbe fact that it shows np well on paper as an adjunct toths coal fields. It has not one single requisite for the location of a town. Every drop of drinking water must be brought in boats distancs of ten miles from the opposite Bide of the bay, and on account cf the contrary and uncertain conditions of wind j aud tides it almost always requires two days for the water boats to make the trip. There is not one single permanent residjnt on tho town site. Not one per son who will acknowledge .that this is bis home. In fa.t, the only persons here, ptior to the arrival of the repre sentative! of the coal company above re ferred to, consists of about 15 stranded prospectors and two or ttires hunters, who arrived from the East a short time ago and are making this their headquar ters. At Anchor Point, near here, ia a gold miniog pioj-otition similar to these coal propositions, except that while there is plenty of oal hcie of a very poor qual ity, tliere is only a trace of gold at Acchor Point. And yet at Anchor Point hundredi of thousands of dollars have been expended, and ship loads of valuable machinery unloaded (or the purpose of working mines which have been thoroughly known and prospected for more than a hundred years and which the people of this country have known for that length of time to be of no value. I could multiply instances without number, of which I am personally con versant, eiiiiiUr to those above men tioned, in which n.on have invested the eaviug cf a lifj time, impoverished their families and trokeu up their homes in an insaue desire io acquire 6Udden wealth, only to find on investigation that they had absolutely nothing to show for their sacrifices and that they had been made the victims of designing knave?. And yet as long as there is a trace of gold at Anchor Point, as loug as tho coal measures crop out on Cook's Inlet, there will be found men to invest their money in bCL'cmcs ior ueveiojemeni. 1 am thoroughly persuaded of the truth of the say i iir Hi.it '"a sucker is 'born every minute." Ttioro is one thiuv;, however, of which Homer has a right to boast, and that ia th fact that there in to bo found in the surrounding country the bert hunting grounds in Alaska, and in tbe United States, especially if large pame is sought. On the plateaus aud iu the valleys of the Kania Peninsular may be found hetda of moodn and caribou, and on tho mouutaiui au I atuoui g!oir i.r huu- i dredJ aud even ihousauds of the bighorn or mountain threp. Black and brown bears are abundant within ten cr fifteen miles of Homer. Ttio brown bear of AUskii is the king of the forest. I hare seen the skin of a brown baar which measured III feet in length, and tho fur dealers tell of skins much larger. At Homer I met Mr. Dalt DeWeese, of Cauon City, Colorado and Mr. Harry E. Lee, of Chicago; tbe former being noted as a hunter of big game. This is the third summer he has spent in this part of Alaska. Daring last summer he was in the employ of the Smithsonian Insti tute, engaged in gathering specimens of the animals and birds found here. Mr. Lee was also here last summer hunting for his own pleasure, and found so much sport to bis liking, that he has returued this summer for another season hunt. Mr. DeWeese succeeded last year in doiug what has seldom if ever been ac complished before, in making a number of Cue photographs of the bighorn sheep aa they grazed on their native pastures. He also secured fioe photograph! of the moose uud other wild animals alive aud free, in the (oierti and on the mountains. lioih of the so uii ii rcturnuJ early to theee hunting grounds, for tl.e purpite of buutii g Lear during thu early part of the season, while the fur is at its prime, and they i l remain until lute in the fall, in order that they may kill the moose when his tiornu are at full tire, and tbe big' horn thcep, when tlrj wool ia iu prime condiliou. Tttese mea are accompauiod by lUeir wives, who expect to go with their hus bands into the tiumiug grounds. Moosu and bear can bo found within o or 10 miles of Homer, and the bighorn within ".'5 or iiO mi'es. While I have been here a young native, who has becu out on two hubliog trips lasting laocr three days each, his killed 10 bearr Mr. DeWretu informed nia thnl at one lime, da ing btt season's hunt, be CouuteJ, 1-v the litljj of hia liclJlai9, Ovel 5J0 shft-jt 1:1 tigul ut une time, and that there Were bo doubt vs u.any more wi'.hin the hu-u-j lii.-dance biJdcu l;y the briuh and rock?. Theie are bu'. fc wbite mm here, tud they me rugagtU iu proipccisug, and kill only such animals as they may de sire tor food. Tho natives of ourse bunt lite bear f.T its ekin, but Wiey hunt almost entirely uIoL'g the beach of the bat a and inlets, gjing oniy wbvretbcy can travel with tLeir cauoea, ceidom go ing word lba:i 4 or o milts inland, fhere is no markci for eithtr the moose or the sheep, and they hunt theee ani mals only for ta-ir meat, saving the skins perhaps f.T their un use. It must cot b u.iJerbtood. however, 'hat the hunter who peuelra'.es the hauuta ol the big gene iu this part of Alaska, will find a park or a mea-low to bout over. Hs must inaka op his iniad to traverse as routi a combination oi jangles, mo rass and mountains, as can be found in ths United Sjtts. But tti game is here and it is well worth the expense of tbe jiurney to this pont to tin J it an.l In 3 hardships which must bs encountered t a kill it. I kao that the gama is here for the kiliug. If any of my friends iu the United States would hko to take a littlo bunt, it they will meet ms hare ia the fall after my work ior Uncle Sam is finished, I will giaraatee to find the game for tlism, if they will agree to kill it.
