ChLntcrlcml Sckentes of & volenti y XlmAcd Peraona for Et1 !lihlB odd Eattr prtova. Many societies with the most out landish, objects bare from time to time been founded. Here are a few cases of receut grorth in London and else where. A lady of means living iu a large provincial town quite recently founded a select society for providing the work ing classes "with cheap, moral litera ture. That the specimens of work turned out by this society are moral there can be no question; that they lire cheap must bo couceiheii, for they are given away; but that they ore litera ture may be open to grave dOubt. Ihe reallv extraordinary feuturc of this society appears in the fact that not only is the literature given away, but the articles of the society provide "that all profits accruing from the sale of the society's pamphlets are to be de voted to the founding andt mainten anee of a society for the protection of domestic servants." Thus one thing lends to another, or would lead if the "moral literature f-old. As it is, it is merely distributed to small tradesmen, who wrap "ha" porths of tea" and sugar in the pages for the moral elevation of their cus touiers. Kverv week a fresh budget of the "literature" from the pen of the so ciety's founder is distributed free among the tradespeople round about. Another society has Wen formed by three or four ladies for the purpose of providing boys over the age of 13 wilii boxing gloves. The object sounds bellicose, but really it was most pacific. the society being impressed with the belief that if street boys were given more facilities for fighting with tfceir Cits the use of knives and grawtc stones would eventually be numbered among the dead arts. Therefore, to encourage fighting with fists and at the same time to minimise the facial damage which results from bare fisticuffs, the society suggested the distribution of the softest aci. i;:ot innocent of boxisg gloves. Xiiektchs meetings of the society were held, but it never got beyoml suggestions, ar.il so grand boxing contests at street cor ners are still things of the untamed fu ture. The courage of some people is really stupendous! Fancy a sweet little so ciety of eight mortal beings having for its object "compulsory arbitration in international disputes." Vet, i-uch a society was actually foundeO, and with no intention of being funny, either. The society haJ a f und, too, amounting to something like 13. What this fund, was for cannot be de cided, but it was probably-intended for buving off claims niedu by one nation against another. It was unfortunate that the society liecauie extinct before the outbreak of war between America and. Spain. It would- have been interesting 1o watch whether the society would have bought Cuba from Spain and have pre sented it to America, thus preventing the war. If youtake an acorn a lU pass through it a thread by which it can be balanced in water, the aeon? will shoot in Urr.c and a little oak tree will grow out of the acorn in more tune. Well, a c-ha r itably inclined lady, the widow- c( a clergyman, recently et oa foot a movement to supply lmJicine IwKlrs and. f.corns to dwellers in the lurrs ct London, that they might have in th'ir aleV.es the refreshing and elevatii g in fluence of oak trees growing ou tf the necks of bottles. There were many favorable point about the scheme. The members of tin society would- be i ' .Tested, in collect ing acorns awl svianle bottle: the poor roceie": of these miniature for ests would 1 edifir cl by the prcgr f tlxir acorns, and. until the acorns be gan to shoot, they would have a Icrg ard esccllcrt lessen in pltience. A hundred bottUd acorns w re dis tributed in the IZait Fi 'I by. the so ciety's workers, but for Irek i.f reason able support and eori:rr:.ti.:i tie scheme died down when, like vv.r of i!s own acorns, it wns jc- lwpinr.irg to show tome results.
