A Profit of Prosperity. Comptroller ot tbe Currency James 11. Eckels has profited by the improvement of tbe times to improve tbe tone of his oratory. He speaks much better uuder McKinley tban be UU under ueveianu, and. moreover, has learned a much pleasanter message lo deliver to the peo ple. Instead of being a mere cuckoo, re peating the sams old song on tbe money question, as he was under the lust ad ministration, ne nas now Decouie a gen uine prophet of prosperity and talks like a statesman. Tbe address at the banquet given bim on Thursday evening by the Clearing house Association at Denver was an ex cellent example of wbat an official utter ance ougut to be on occasions oi me kind. No one, of course, expected a weighty argument or elaborate discussion of financial topics at a banquet, and yet the address was by no means iignt or un important. It dealt with topics ot sari- ous public concern, and treated them in a manner to conurm the popular oeiici that wc are now at tbe becinmni: of au era of prosperity which will continue (or many years to come. The important issue at this lime as pointed out by Mr. Eckels is to bring about a better understanding bctweeu tbe East and tbe West. It will uot do, as ho said, for tbe East to boast itself of its possession of tbe surplus capital of the country, which has come with ae, thrift aud opportunity ; nor for tbo West io point wnn overweeuing jtiuo io us stupendous resources. Surplus capita I will avail the East nothiog unless it is employed, and the great resources of tbe West will not be urotitable until de veloped. There is, therefore, a mutual interest between the two sections and the welfare of each requires that the capital and resources should be brought together. Vhat We're Smoking. "Where are cigar manufacturers get ting their Havana tobacco these days'." asked a Philadelphia bulletin reporter of a Ubestnut-street dealer. "They're not getting it." was the rc ply, ''Havana tobacco is worth its weight in gold. Weyler won't let any tobacco be exported from Coba, and there s none there to export, which is a combination of circumstances impossible to buck against." "Then, what are we smoking?" "Well, if you pay a fair price for a ci gar you're probably smoking Havana seed leaf, grown in Lancaster county, with a slight admixture of tbe cheaper grades of imported tobacco which has been held over. But "is bulk of the so called 'Havana' cigars intbis country to day are made of Mexican tobacco, ibe Wevler prohibition has started a great boom in Mexico's tobacco trade, and there is no reason why tbat country should not build up a reputation for it self in this line. The higher grades of Mexican tobacco can hardly be dis tinguished Irom Cuban leaf. They are finely flavored, bnrn well and make ex cellent fillers. But don't fool yourself into sny delusion that you are smoking Havana cigars, either this year or next. there will be no genuine Havana touac co here for at least two years, ibe war bas prevented the planting ol crops in the best districts, and the inability of the growers to evade Weyler's edict againet exportation from tbe island has taken away all ambition to raise a crop. All Right as an Orator. John L. Sulliyan has published a statement of principles according to which he would rule the city government of Boston should be be successful in bis aspirations to be elected mayor. He de Clares that as far as speech making goes as a qualification he is all right, because "lung power is tue principal thing in an orator" and few men have more "of that sort of thing" than he. To illustrate, he declares that he has often spoke to crowds of 10,000 people in London and used only one corner of bis mouth, and never saw a crowd so big that he would have to use the whole ol his mouth to make liimbelf heard. All this goes to show tbat pugilism develops the talking powers butter than any other kind of exercise, but that needed uu new evidence. The greater tho pugilist Hie greater the talker, from John L. dowu to Corbelt, Fil.simmous "it id genus umuo. The Hop. Tbe hop grower approached a local hop buyer yesterday with the remark: "What is the nrice of hops now '' The I. h. b. said iu answer: "A strictly choice hop will bring 13 ccuts."
