i- THE NEW NOltTHWEST, THURSDAY DECEMBER 1, .1881. ) PROKESSIONAU SELECTED VERSE." LKOAL ADVKKTISKMENTH. 7T . I WOMEN TO Tins FRONT. In all apes woman has done her part In the grea? events of the period in which she existed ; but if the Amazon be pasaed over, only In her individual capacity r" The Roman matron giving' her husband or. son to the . republic Is one of the typical group of antiquity. It Is only of late years that women have been organising for action In public affairs. Jeff Davis, during the Rebellion, made it a point always to appeal to the wometL For a long time they weret7rhapg, his most effi "cTent recruiting sergeants, V They sent their sweet hearts and sons to the battle-fields, with a sublime devotion to the cause in which, they had become enthusiasts. Now we have them organized Into a land league, lu Ireland, which Is bothering the English government, and which Ih capable of ere-' atlne quite as much stir as the male branch. - : But, after all, this is only In accordance wlth4 A 1 I . . I. .1 . V. I- - C ..... I .. uiv vciiMcuticB ui mo iiiurs, iuvuku ii u person just now seems to be able to determine where thwe tendencies, are. going to land civilization. In oriental lands woman is the slave of man. . Her peducatlon from time "Immemorial has been dis couraged, on; the xround.that,Alaves should' not know too much. That Is the rule to-day in China, India, and throughout the whole of Islam. , The same Idea up to a very reeent period wan enter tained In many parts of Europe, but In a modified form." Our great-grandmothers were not highly educated women. In case of disaster 100 years ." ago, the average woman had nothing to fall back -upon but such simple handicraft as she had acquired. But now women are pressing Into all departments of life. -They gained their flrsTTet ognitlon as public workers in the public schools of this country.-From that vfotagf 'ground they are advancing in different directions. t Io-tiilajuprislng of the women, ihey-db not always force theruselTealnto-poaltlona which they can contlnue.to hold.' There: are functions which can only be effectively discharged by the stronger sexv But this Is a matter which Is bound to regu late Itself. Women are now found in employ ments in France that would -be considered 'here - quite unusual. As book-keepers and cashiers, they are almost everywhere. There are few forms of activity in which they do not appear. This re sults from the carrying on of the affairs of de ceased husbands. There is a woman in Paris who -cond uct "the horses hoel ug bus! nesa on h er uwn .'account, iln England the field for the, employ ment of women has been more restricted but it is mow: belngTconstantiyenlarged. . The- grada"of women's employment is lower than It Is in France; Women attending bars strike the visitor as very muchout of place; but for a long time, when the ranks of the Jemimas wewrleft behind, woman could find no other employment in England, ex cept she was expert with the needle. Ureat prog ress has, however, of late been made. The Crimean war pushed English women to the front as actors In great national dramas... Under the lead of Florence Nightingale, they then emerged . from the seclusion of ages. r - With us -women, are beginning to appear In almost every arena., We have successful women doctors. Women work as copyists, printers, clerks nnil r minimi mmtr wrmn go to the unlvem ties as wei Las the young men. Tney almost mo nopolize one branch of the public service the schools- In .spots they are coming on the scene as voters, and politicians. They have always played an important part in the arrangement of state affairs. Many 'a great national event can -be traced down to a woman's suegestlon. Europe s-once-ruled-bT-three women ' Catherineof i Russia, Maria Thereta, and the ''Pompadour. tlneenV4ctorhireigns .oyer the British Empire. Two Emprfweseontro1IedthCTkTiiesegOVerQnlent until the recent death of the Eastern Empress. But as direct actors in the great affairs of life they have not been conspicuous except in such isolated cases as Joan of Arc, over whose fate there Is still a cloud; In quite a number of States women now vote at school elections.-. In some of (he iiew Ter ritories they have been yotlng on all questions and serving as Jurors. Perhaps, in war hereafter they expect to till more Important places than those of hospital nurses or vlvandieres. - Many of the old notions In relation to women, are disappearing. The laws In relation to prop erty have been gradually liberalized so far as wnm. n la AAnnapnaH Tti mruit IIIImI ivMinlrlfki ... . . . . .... . . i . . sne can now nave property 01 ner own. jnengnt to ner snare in me common property is tuny rec ognized. The notion Is gaining ground steadily that sex should make no difference in the rewards of industry, and that the woman who can do as much effective work as a man ought to have the same pay. Taking in the whole field, It Is evident : there Is an advance everywhere toward what may be called the Independence of the gentler sex. The enlargement of the sphere of her Tabors gives her more the control of her own destinies. But what effect all this is going to have on the prob- t lem of civilization has not been worked out satis- factor! ly by anyone. The movement is not any where halting. On the contrary, it seems to be gathering momentum. Perhaps it is as well that it should b so, for In that case it will soon be- come apparent jrhetherjtls to goon to Its culm.N - nation, or a reaction is to set lnsSlF.'1uUtlhC A projected liotel In Toledo will have no bar room, but in its stead a small chapel, In which the guests may hold religious services.
