LETTER PE0M POETLABD. To thk KniTitR ofihkXbw North w rmt : I have been a reader of your paper about one year. At first, I cared very little about it; but, as weeks rolled by)' I began to imbibe its spirit aud Investi gate its truths, and the Nuw North WKST has become, a welcome visitor in our family. I followed Mrs. Duniway iu her wlud ing tour through Southern Oregon, and was startled when I heard that a. drunken mob had beaten her with eggs ami burned her in effigy. But I was re joiced to see the pluck, nerve and en ergy that she possessed in daring to fiice the mob, and stand up boldly for the prineiple of equal suflrage fur both wh. I was astounded when I saw that a paper like the UVsr Shore, of this city, would, in a driveling editorial, get right down ou Its marrow-bones and pander to the mob at Jacksonville for pattonage. But I am glad to know that It is about the only paper iu the State that has sunk so low in the filth and mire of selfishness as to eulogize a mob and Insult Mrs. Duniway, as the editor did, by telling her that he "had a right to command that her paper be edited with a little more decency than would be expected of a pot-house politician !" During the year that the New XoHfru-. wkst has been a regular visitor in my house, we have had three young ladles in the family, and we all fail to see in It one word that any pure-minded persou cannot read with beuefil. But you did shake the little chap of the I I'M StorfW'HRK COACH TO AND FHOMTHB "OUfjK. right hard, and may It do hint good. 1'ernill me to say that the principles for which you are so nobly hattllug are growing stronger every day. As the ieople reed aud study, intelligent men aud women will everywhere embrace the truth; and drunkeii demagogues will continue to fight the right, just as they did in the days of slavery. That disgraceful seene at Jacksonville will! live iu history, and those very eggs that were thrown at the defender of woman's rights will be tbe nest eggs from which will sprlug Into life a principle that will save the people from drunkenness aud 1 its twin companion, prostitution , , I remember, when a small boy (my father lived In Indiana), that old Ben Wade came through our State lecturing on abolitionism. He did not come to our toA-ii'but an honest old'tjuaker by the name of Jese Junes came and made the first autl-slavery speech the people had heard, ami they tltrew eggs al him and threatened his life; but he went on preaching against oppression, lu spite of mobs. And I remember that, after the passage of the fugitive slave law, a poor slave was fleeing from the bondage of the free United States to seek a home iu Canada, aud, beiug hard pressed, came to my father's house. Three slave catchers in the neighborhood were on his track, and he hid in my father's cellar, under our log cabin. My father told those man-hunters that his chil dren would live to see slavery abolished lu this nation, and thank God It is true. I believe that Mrs. Duniway la bat tling for a prineiple stronger than the emancipation of negro slaves; and I be lieve that Oregon will be among the first of the States lu tvhee! to the front in this great movement.
