Ity 3Ivn. jVljiRuil Scott Dunitvay, Editor "New Northwest," Portland, Oregon, with HavirnFiji. illustrations, and bucqaxtly boond A new enie, from a vigorous and skillful pen, on a subject which occupies a large fttaea ht Hie social discussions of the day. The subject Is taken from Mr. Whittier"s short narrative mC "Da vid Matson," with which the reader la probably familiar. David MatMW, a Merrlmae setter, was captured by the Algerlnea (during one of his years he obtained release, and was on his way tn his old employer, who Informed him that his wife, believing blm dead, had remarrind, and, stunned by his trouble, he surrendered all claim as husband and father to the mau who bad stepped Into hi place, and departed. Mrs. Duniway has found a theme In this story with which her heart beats In warmest sympathy, and dicative of tbe fullest accord. She pictures the etous PebMtah in vtvld colors; and how years of poverty and longing, and the eries of the. bun gry hoys, compelled poor Anna to yield to Pelatlah'x importunity, "HIe,reJoiee, My poor, unmated dove,"-sald he, " And look henceforth for love to me." A HUte farther ou be says: " Become my wife and you shall be Made happy through prosperity," While, If sbe persists In declining his advances, wolf-like, he threatens to abandon ber to star vation and cold. And this Pelatiah was a "deacon," " In exhortations deep and mud." Tlie wanderings of David, bis captivity, release, hapless interview with Pelatiah, discovery ol Anna's second wifehood, and his sad going back to Algeria, are all told so pathetically tbat our feelings at e deeply enlisted. No one, with any true sentiment, can read the poem without be ing thoroughly stirred. The illustrations are in admirable keeping with the passages they are designed to portray, and a fine engraving of the author is a fitting frontispiece. The subject spirit, fire and passion of the poem should give it an extensive reading, aside from the interest which the literary reputation of the author must awaken In it. As a specimen of book-making the volume Is certainly beautiful, and would adorn any center-table. We know oi no work so well adapted as a present. It Is printed on heavy tinted paper and most beautifully IwhiuiI, pike, 00 ; full gilt extra, x). For sale by book-sellers, or by mail, post-paid, ly S. E. WELLS & Co., E.
