DAVID AND AjlVNA MATSON- Xly 3Xx-.-;. jVlirail Scott Utiiii-way, Editor "New Northwest," Portland, Oregon, WITH UKAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATIONS, AND ELEGANTLY BOUND A new epic, from a vtgoroo and skillful pen, on a subject which occupies a large place in tbe social discussions of the day. The subject is.taken Irom Mr. Whittle rs short narrative of "Da vid Matson," with which the reader is probably familiar. David Matson, a Merrlms sailor. was eaptnreil by the Algerlnes (during one of years lie obtained release and was on his way bis old employer, who Informed him tbat his stunned by bis trouble, he surrendered all claim as husband and lather to tbe man who bad stepped Into his place, and departed. Mrs. Dantway has Irtund a theme m this story with which her heart beats In warmest sympathy, BDd her lines flow on In the smsoth eadeoee In dicative of the rullest accord. She pictures the gentle, tender, trustful Anna and the wily, cov etous Pelatlab In vivid -colors; and how years of poverty and longing, aad theories of tbe bun gry boys com pel led poor Anna to yield to Pelatlah's Importunity, "Rise, rejoice. My poor, nn mated dove," said be, " And look henceforth tor love to me." A little farther on he says : " Become my wife and yon shall be Made bappy through proserity," While, If she persists In declining his advances, vation and cold. And this Pelatlab was a "deacon," " In exhortations deep and load." The wanderings of David, his captivity, release, hapless Interview with Felatlah, rttseoveryot Anna's second wifehood, and his sad going back to Algeria, arc all told so pathetically that our feelings ate deeply enlisted. No one, with any true sentiment, eun read tbe poem wtthost be ing thoroughly stirred. Tbe 111 nitrations are In admirable keeping with tbe passages they are' designed to ortray, ami a fine engraving or the author is a Suing frontispiece. Tho sobjeet spirit, Hre and passion of the poem should give It an extensive reading, aside from the Interest which the literary reputation of the author must awaken In It.
