Seventy-four arrests were made by the police lorce in this city during the month of February. As usual, the greatest number of these were arrested for being "drunk and disorderly." Rev. Dr. Beutley, recognizing the fact that the world's workers are not all men, discoursed at the Taylor-street Church on Sunday evening concerning "The Working Men and Women.1' Six persons indicted for keeping houses of prostitution in this city were brought before Judge Shattuck, of the State Circuit (Jourt, on Monday. A plea of "not guilty" was entered in each case. The W. R. T. The government snag-puller, lifter a complete overhauling, aud the addition of new machinery, is now ready for an active and effective campaign against the snags and other obstructions that impede the navigation of the Upper Willamette. Operations will begin as soon as the river is sufficiently low. After an intermission of some months religious exercises were conducted on the street in front of the Y. M. C. A. rooms last Sunday. The usual crowd gathered, and hearkened in respectful silence. The rooms of the Association were, after the close of the street exer cises, densely crowded while the cus tomary Sunday afternoon services were held. Mrs. J. DeVore Johnson, late Presi dent of the State Woman Sullrage As sociation, and present Corresponding Secretary of the same, has been sojourn ing in this city for a few days. We are pleased to note that she is rapidly re covering from her recent illness, aud is as usual brimful of plans for the ad vancement of woman. May she live to deposit many ballots for liberty aud right. The McGibeuys left this city on Wednesday morning for Puget Sound. They will sing at various points on the Sound, and proceed from thence to Vic toria, from which place they will prob ably sail for San Francisco during the latter part of the month. We take pleasure in recommending them to the consideration of concert-goers, aud trust that popularity and prosperity may at tend them. G. We inadvertently omitted to mention the Sunday School concert at the Hall- street Churph last Sunday afternoon, at which over Qye hundred persons were present. The pupils aud teacuers ac quitted themselves admirably. Indeed, Brother Caples and his co-workers sur passed tuemselves in all they under took. Au old-fashioned protracted meet ing has been iu progress in this church for several weeks, and much religious feeling prevails among the people. Even conservative ministers rejoicing in the prefix of "Right Reverend" are compelled by the demands of public sentiment to discourse of "Woman's Mission." A lecture upon this engross ing topic was delivered by Rt. Rev. Bishop Morris at Trinity Church on Sunday evening. Whether the women of his audience were convinced that they had a "mission." or whether thev were compelled to "ask their husbands at Home" to elucidate obscure points in tne speakers discourse, we are not au vised. The Liberal Association, at their reg ular '2. o'clock meeting in Good Teni plars' Hall, next Sunday, propose to discuss tne question: "Jtesolved, That Rationalism, or Ma terialistio Pantheism, is Inconsistent with the Discoveries of Science, and Contrary to Reason and Conscience." These resolutions are not intended to express the sentiments of the Associa tion, but to form a topic for discussion This one was proposed by an outsider, who will be allowed forty minutes in which to affirm the proposition, and will be followed by other speakers, pro ana con. a. general invitation is ex tended to all to attend and take part. In making up your lists of periodicals for 1876, don't forget the West Shore, the only illustrated paper published in Ore gou, devoted to literature in general and the resources of Oregon aud Wash ington Territory in particular. HEWBJTEMS. STATE ASD TERMTORIAl. Upwards of S2.000 in postal cards passed through the post office at Seattle last week. The Younir Mpu's Christian Associa tion at Oregon City numbers at present 76 members. The Benton Coal Company brought into Seattle eighteen scow loads of coal within eighteen days. A man named Bragg, who resided near Independence, died last Saturday at the advanced age of 110 years. Funerals have taken place for eight consecutive Sabbaths at Salem. Most of the deaths hare resulted from typhoid fever. An additional foot of snow fell in Boise Basin last week, which is worth many thousands of dollars to the placer miners in that region. A bale of Oregon flax is to he sent to Dundee, Scotland, to be woven into linen and compared with similar fabrics Irom flax grown eisewnere. The women of Vancouver have peti tioned the town council to allow one cow belouging to each family to run at large in the corporation limits. Census reports for 1875 show an excess of 2,858 males iu the State. They show, also, 27, ICG legal voters aud a total pop ulation of 101,020, exclusive of Chinese and Indians, who together number about 16,000. A granddaughter of Brigham Young recently eloped with and married aiieu tile, and all the Mormons are excited over the matter to a fearful pitch. She has since been stolen from her husband aud spirited away, and her husband is vainly trying to nud Her. Washington's birthday was celebrated in Astoria by members of the Oregon Pioneer and Historical Society in a manner befitting the great occasion. Au address was delivered by Dr. Atkin son, and a sumptuous banquet was spread iu the Library rooms, of which 300 persons partooK. The number of acres of land in Ore gon under cultivation in 1875, as re turned by (Tie census taken, is 595,629: on these were raised 5,257,102 bushels of wheat, 2,983,068 of oats, 289,703 of bar ley, 17,363 of rye, 96,728 of corn, 527,829 of potatoes, 1,175,251 of apples, 161,433 tons of hay, and 28,187 pounds ot to- acco.
