0 FRIDAY OCTOBER 23, 1S74. H0MENEWS. The first lecture In theMuscum course will take place on Tuesday, the 27th inst. Theriiolps troupe have returned from Salem and are again delighting theater goers of this city. One hundred and twenty-eight mar riage licences have been issued in Mult nomah county so far this year. J. C. Meussdorfler, corner of Front and Morribon streets, keeps on hand the finest assortment of hats and caps in the city. Cu.ll upotphim and be headed. E. St. Clair, somewhat notorious on the police records, wa3 sentenced by the Circuit Court, on his own plea of guilty, to one year in the penitentiary, and was taken to Salem last Saturday. Prof. Rice, the man who is fifdwl wlfli the power of iniud reading, is exciting the womler of the numerous visitors at the Museum this week. Go and witness ins performances and solve the my&tery if you can. The "Granger Chum" advertised else where is rapidly working Its way Into public favor. The enterprising proprie- tur uuf exuiDiieu it on auout thirty oc casions, at as many different places, taking orders wherever exhibited. The committee appointed on the com petitive examination for a cadetshlpat West Point consisted of Judge Deady, Dr. Ghiselin, and Prof. Anderson. The examination took nlace on Kntuniav last. Edward H. Brooko was the fortu nate aspirant. The "spotted boy" and the smallest living woman in the world nre on exhi; bitlou on Washington street, between Front and First, They are not repulsive monstrosities, but genuine curiosities, and all should avail themselves of the present opportunity to visit them. A novelty, in the way of a needle threading thimble, is attracting the at tention of the curious in this city just now. Procure one of these simple con trivances, and avoid straining your eyes during the coming dark days of winter. "A knife and scissors sharpener" for household use also commends Itself to the ladies. The third and last game in the series between the rival base-ball clubs the Arcadians of this city and the Collegi ates of Salem took place at the Oregon City grounds last Saturday. The game did not reach a fair and satisfac tory close being broken up on the ninth inning -by a misunderstanding little short of a general row. The um pire has decided the game in favor of tne Arcadians by a score of 9 to 0. NEWS JTEMS. STATE AND TEKRITORIAL. Laramie won't be satisfied with less than a $100,000 hotel. The Oregon City "Woolen Mills are running to their utmost capacity. The flouring mills at Lafayette are crowding the wheat through from IS to 24 hours a day. The Eugene City Yarn Mills have run out of staple, and want 100,000 pounds of wool immediately. Stone masons and brick-layers com mand from $7 to $9 a day in Helena, and are scarce at that. The County Court of Jackson county let the contract for building the uew jail to Smith fc Hall at $3,870. Two wagon loads of pumpkins and squashes were raised from four seeds on Luke Taylor's place, Young river. The vines covers 40 feet square. The gross receipts of the Olympia Fair were something in excess of $000 more than enough, we understand, to pay off all expenses incurred. Mrs. Barnes, of Olympia, took the first premium on washing machines at the recent Fair of the "Western Wash ington Industrial Association. The Hillsboro district schoolhouse building looks nulto handsome in its new coat of paint. It is the handsomest buildinir of the kind in the county. D. M. C. Gault keeps a number one school in it aiso. Tho capital slock of the Yamhill River Improvement Company is $50,000, divided into shares of $50 each. The in corporators aro J. W. Cowles, T. B, Handley, H. G. Burns, G. "Wilson and C. J. Handley. The dedication ceremonies of the Catholic Church took place in Astoria on Sunday, tho 11th inst. The dedica tion was made by Archbishop Blanche!, and the church was christened, "Mary, Star of the Sea." The Albany warehouses and mills are uearlv full of "rain now, yet It is esti mated that nearly one-third of the crop Is yet to be stored. The inquiry is therefore pertinent, where is the balance of tne gram to ue htoreu v The Yamhill County Council of Grangers met at Lafayette on Monday last, and transacted important business. Twelve Granges were represented. The next Council will meet at McMinnville on the last Monday iu December. The camp-meeting recently held at Dixie was much disturbed by hoodlums. Cutting saddles and haruwe, taking linen-pins out of wagons, setting ttiu fence around the camp-grounds on fire, and divers and sundry pllferlngs, are among the exploits noted. Mr. E. Smith, carriage maker of Port laud, exhibited one open ""J one covered buggy m? '" lr grounds, wi,ik jwaerve especial mention. These carriages are especially light and dura ble, and those in need of such a purchase nml who isn't should call unon him before purchasing elsewherc. Of course jir. ennui oore on me umu riuuuus.
