If truly benevolent and kind-lieartctl people could realize the sincere repent unco and sorrow of those women who have through cause seemingly beyond their control fallen into tbe paths of vice, some way would be provided through-which escape might be effected. The number of this class who commit suicide, and the fact that their career of vice closes, on an average, in five years, testify most positively to the r " -orse and unbounded wretchedness .vhicli "Woman's Biglits in Hew York. The Asscmblv Jttdloln TV f mnttH no. gave a hearing last evening in the As sembly Chamber to the representatives mmkc uumuer oi iemaie petitioners, who claimed the right of suffrage and protested against taxation without rep- reseuwuon. She then referred to the fact that the colored race had lately been enfran chised, and inquired why it was that the women of the State were regarded as less worthy of suffrage than the blacks ? Passimr to the question of tax atlon without representation, she asked the committee to remember that a dis franchised class was always an oppressed class, and then proceeded to give some statistics going to show, in the light of some recent verdicts, the slight estima tion in wuicn t no lire oi woman was ueiu. Then addressing herself to the Suf frage question, the speaker contended that the majority of her sex did want to vote, and that they were entitled to the privilege. Mrs. Blake is an easy, grace ful speaker, and was frequently ap- piauaea ounng me progress anu at the conclusion of her address. Miss Susan B. Anthonv followed. Miss Anthony rehearsed her own expe rience in connection with her own at tempt to vote, and named Henrv It. Selden as her choice for Chief Justin. She understood, however, that Chief T At -i r 1 1 ' . justice wane was an auvocaie or Y oman's Rights. She referred to the great Injustice of taxing women without allowing them representation, and said that in Roches ter mere wero 3,000 women who are property holder. These women paid one-fifth of the taxation of that city, and yet they have no voice in manag ing the aflairs of the city. Rings and plunderers may rob tho city and swell the taxes, and all the the woman can do is to pay their assesments. This, how ever, she said, was annroachlnir an end. Choice seats have been set apart for the wives and daugh ters of Senatori and Members, from which we, the common people, are as sternly excluded, as from the diplomatic gallery. This Is unjust to the strangers visiting the Capitol, who are often un comfortably crowded in the other gal leries, wuue tnose aristocratic reserva tions are almost empty.
