Walla Walla. March 24.—Debating and athletics are the main topics of interest to students of Whitman col lege this month. Last Wednesday team Whitman academy sent a against Klickitat aeademv. of Gol dendale. Wash. This is the ii rat academy Whitman has debated with. and a great deal of intetest was taken in the contest. Walt.'r Eels, Roy Rudlo anil Eugene Hilbert rep- resented Whitman academy ami the question discussed was: Resolved. That United States senati rs should be elected by the legally qualified voters of the different stairs." The principal debating interest, however, centers in the intercollegi ate contests which will incur early in April. The debate with th«“ Wash ington Agricultural college and school of science takes place in Pullman about April 3. It was originally set for Friday of last week, but was post- ¡xrned on account of the smallpox scare at Pullman. Whitman repre sentatives are Edward D. Baldwin Robert Lee Ringer and H. Elmer Brown. The question of railroad pooling is the issue and Wnitman college will uphold the affirmative. About the same time Whitman s« nds another team consisting of Guy Galloway. Victor Price »nd Bert Palmer against the University of Ida Lu. They will defend the policy of taxing personal property. Whitman won with the university last year and she is very confident of giving a good amount of herself in this contest. Try ours—if you’re going to try any. NEW CHURCH DEDICATED. Church of Christ Hold Special Serv ices in Their New Building at Athe na—$4,600 Raised. Athena, March 25. -The Christian church, often known as the Church of Christ, at Athena, is iu the midst of a revival, There have been 70 ac cessions to the church aiready. Evan- gelist Dr. .Martin has proved himself an able evangelist. This church began their plans for building last July, October first saw the work begun. The building is very eomnuxlious. seating 700 people. It is artistically arranged either from an exterior or an interior viewpoint; while all is arranged in a modern anil ■onvenient wav. The cost was about $10,000. All declare it a great credit to Athena Three services were held Sunday. At the morning service about $3u<w was raised in a little while. In the afternoon service a balance of $16 ihi was raised, when the building was solemnly dedicated with impressive ■eremonv. At each of those services the house was thronged. At the din ner hour, three or four hundred par ticipated in a basket dinner in the lining room in the basement. It was 1 great day for the people. $4600 was raised to dear all indebtedness. GOVERNMENT EXPERT NOW INVESTIGATING ECHO PLANS. Censures the Irresponsible Boomers and Locators Who Are Reporting That the government Is Certain of Putting in the Echo System of Irri gation. The fact that the government's op erations in the irrigation lin<- in this county have lieen purely provisional and experimental is a feature tha' has he»«n often emphasized by the East Oregonian, and that view and fact are now confirmed by John T. Whist- ler. th«« government expert who has had charge of the surveys on the But ter Creek reservation. Further than stating the bare fact that what has been don«- so far is in the nature purely ol' investigation. Mr. Whistler refuses to express hlm- self as to the nature and results of what has already been done. When questioned he says simply that he 1» not here to express opinions, having no authority to do so He is an <xec- utive officer m«“rely and will make his report to the government more as such than as an adviser.
