Header, dees it ever ooear to vr aaad that the pablic press is a powerM iaMra mest ia baitdia up a eoontry, aad that the creates: boon wecsjy is Ike liberty ei a fixe press Wbea we look back over the dark pages of history, well may we exclaim "the pen is mightier than the swvrdr We should be very thankfal that we rive in the nineteenth century ietcad of the Feu dal Age when our forefathers were Milling betfr thtn serfs. True, it was the sword first thea th pta; then the press ; then the freedom of that press. What has it dose for the world It has civilised itaadtaagbt every maa who has a claim te that name, that he is a free moral ageat, responsible to society and his God alone for bis life here below; and better still, aree press is teach ing all the children of men efa life beyoad the grave. Here we, the citizens f Uma tilla county, stand with civilization on oae hand; on the other, what? Pauper bar barism, if you please, the proper term to ap ply to the aborigines boMingthose beactifnl lands frem the American people. Bat it will not last long. In the article I wrote shortly after the late Indian ostbreak here, I concluded as follows : "The Great Fath er ia Washiagton presented oar chiefs with a watch and the latest improved riSe That is the most appraptiate thing he ever did ia bis life. Ia the first place the coed book says: 'He that lives by the swnrd shall die by the sword.' Mark that. Again, the watch is symbolical to those chiefs of the rapid flight of the time when tbiy shall give place and surrender up to the pale, face warriors from the rising. mn these beautiful lands of theirs only fulfilling their destiny." Reader, I believe that time has come, the Reservation wOl soon be opeaed, and the iron horse will rush snort ing over these prairies instead of the cay use. Thea three cheers for the press and the future prosperity of Umatilla county Thinking men know I am right when I claim the press to be a powerful instru ment in building up a country. Kow, rea der, do you think we ought to do anything to support our local papers which are do ing everything to make our wants known to the world ? If you are a generous soul, and I know you are, you will do every thing in vour nower to beln build uti our local papers aad we will sooa have no more j patent outsides to complain of. Now be honest Oh, you are! Then why do yoa rob the editor in loaning your paper to Tom, Dick and Harry? Let Ibcm pay fcr it like yourself, my boy, and get them to sub scribe, too. Again, why don't you write to your paper? "Why, I caa't!' Did you ever try? Look at me, a poor unlettered Scot. They print my scribbling, and I am sure you fellows who have been to school so much can easily beat me writing items for your paper. Remember that In build. j ing up your paper you arc building up your property and the commonwealth of your country besides. I havo no interest what ever in any paper or office ia this county, bat I think it our duty, one and all, to do what we can for our local papers, and they willtfo their, cart. JJournr Barer.
