The criticisms of the Ortfexian upon the management of ths public schools of this city have caused during the past few dajs much comment in ill circles or society. In order to get an expression of pnblic sea timentonthe sebjret, Oregonian reporters interviewed a number of prominent citizens whose opinions are given below. The in terviews were taken at rardom, and with out a foreknowledge of the views to b given. W. IL Watkinds I am in favor of a State tax for frae school purposes and squarely opposed to the present system. I believe that a high school is not a part of the common school system. Under the present law a family with a large n l ruber of children can move to this city, snd have every child receive an academic education wilhoatcost. I believe that the pnblic should pay for the education of all childien in the elementary branches and for no more. C D. Folger I hive read the OrtysnUiCt views on the school question very at ten lively and endorse them in every particu lar. I donl believe in hicher edscatica at public expense. Give children & thorough training in elementary branch, and if they have the ambitioa and energy for fur ther stndy, they will tnd the means to ac complish their desires, snd in the end Le better fitted for tho duties of life than un der the pretest system. Gov. W. W. Thayer I am in favor of a good, practical education for all children who desire it, without tbt "crtra" accom plishments. I don't think the pnblic should give children specific edocatioas. I would lite to sec every child have a good sis for an education with a view of pre paring it for industrial and business pur. suits, rather than for professiosal life. Reporter What do -pm Uaak of tfaehish school as part of the common school sys tem Gov. TJisyer I hi vent given the sub ject very close attention, tut I don't believe in it as a part of the system. Advanced education and preparation for professions should be at private, cot public expense. If any facilities are granted at public ex pense, beyond elementary education, it should be for learning some trade. W. S. Ladd I donl think an academic cr university course should be a part or the common school system. More of reading, writing, spelling, arithmetic, history and geography should be taught somctbinr for the ad vantage of the Uutneu of every day life, those things which are of practi cal benefit. Give children a good elemen tary start, and if a scholar needs more than tat. bs or she will be sure to Had means to obtala it. James SUd I doat believe ia makiar the pnblic schools a place to get a classical education, bst I would have them given cry one who wants it, a thorough, plain Eng lish education, and stop at that I believe that the rich should pay for the education of the poor. I believe that every educated child is a guardian of the property of the rich. I doat think that dead or foreign languages should be taught. Dr. J. A. Chapman I am of the opinion that a thorough knowlego of the elemen tary branches of the English language is all that could be asked far children from the public schools. When that is given, any tchclar with the requisite ambitioa and energy will find means to acquire such ad. ditioaal education as be may desire. C A.
