It is about sixteen hours travel from Denver; first discovered in 1S73. One lead mine was worked from that time to 1S77, when work was discontinued. Tba city now contains IS smelting works. In July, 1S77, Miss Lottie Williams opened the first school; the present school census amounts to 1,200. Teachers salaries range from $G0 to (125 per month. We would add that It Is reported he is very fond of music aad that he zever lets an opportunity pass -of inviting a tune oa the pixso. Prom the Dearer ZAxify JVeu we glean -tbe following important facts: "That an extensive system of irrigation .is fostered by the Stata atiliaing nearly -every stream that ran througk the State of Colorado. Ths law divides the State into -ten separate districts ; each district has a crater commissioner whose duties are sain, ntely set forth in the law. The constrac tia of reservoirs is eccouraged, giving the person who locates a reaervoir the privilege of taking from any unappropriated stream, water fur the purpose of filling his reser woir. The following we clip entira, and 'Call the attention of oar farmers who have settled upon the arid portioa of our county to it: "Kinirftd to irrigation as established in this S'jI is the sinking of artcsiaa wells out on the arid plains, where natural streams of water cannot be used as a basis and ally.' The commissioner of agriculture and Hob., X. P. H0L United State Senator from Col orado, have given this desirable improre SBent a portion of their time, and each have presented the subject in form for congress ional action. As a preliminary to practical tests to be made, the commissioner has en. .gaged the services of Erisbie Walker, late editor of the Wathingion Utpiillie, to pro ceed to Colorado and report upon the posi Unities of artificial irrigation, especially with reference to artesian wells, which, in these sectioas where mountain streams are jtet available, seem to be the only source of supply for irrigation pnrposes. There are -bow some five thousand wells in successful operation, and experiments mace by a French engineer in the Great Sahara desert indicate that the plan is feasible. In some .ef the wells sunk, -water was obtained at a depth of only two hundred or four busdred -feet, and the discharge was equal to 1,100 , 'gallons per ainnte. There is every reason . why a similar result should be obtained in ..the strata underlying the table lands of .Colorado. BBierpiise Rewarded. "We are informed that W. M.
