Frederick Barnnby was educated at
Harrow, and thence proceeded to Oer

quired an unusually perfect acquaintance
with the French, Italian nod German Ian

tho mature ace of seventeen found him
self n cornet in the lloyal Horse Guard.
At this time his breast seems to nnve oecn
fired by the noble ambition to trome the
strongest man in the world. He threw
himself into the pursuit ot muscio witn
all the ardor since hnwn in other direc
tions, and the cup of his joy must hare
been full when a precise examination led
to the demonstration of the fact that his
ami meatured round the bvoeps exactly

diTikt was a dumbbell weighing 470
pounds which he lifted straight out with
one hand, and there w as a standing bet of

camp could perform the same feat. At
the rooms of the London Fencing Club

There is a s-tory told of early barrack
days, which brings pleasantly up a rem
initcencc of the Ticlilume trial. A
hore-dealcr arrived at Windsor with a
pair of beautiful little ponies, which he
had been commanded to sho or to the
queen. Before exhibiting them to Her
Males ty he took them to the cavalry bar
racks for display to the officers of the
uuards. iwrne or these, by way ot a
surprise, led the ponies up stairs into Bar-

leave an alarming difficulty ircratrl it
self. The ponies, though theT had walked
up stairs, could by no means be induced
to walk down again. The officers were
in a fix; the horse-dealer was in dcpair,
when young Biraaby settled the matter
by taking up the ponies, oae under each
arm, and, walking down stair, deposited
thsm in the barrack rard.
But Cornet Baraaby was a. skillful as ;
he was strong. He wai oae of the best
amateur boxers of the day, as Tom Pad
lock. Xat Langham and' Bob Trsvers I
could testify of their own earned experi
ence. il'TeOTcr, he fenced as well as he
boxed, and the turn of his wrist, which
never failed to disarm a swordsman, was
known in more than one of the capitals
of Europe. Tea years ago everybody

in the coin of wasted tissue and failing

taken on lxurd the schooner, but one of
them died in four hours from the time of
the rescue. From the sole .survivor it was
ascertained that the bark was boend from
Doboy, Georgia, to Belfast, Ireland; that
she sprung a leak in a gale and filled
with water, so that it was imposuble to
save any provisions or fresh watrr. The
lumber with which the rease! was loaled
prevented her from sinking, but the
weight of the maits turned the vessel on
her beam-ends until the masts broke
away, when jhe righted, and the men re
trained the deck. Havinz co food or wa

but the moment one died the survivcra
cut the throat of the deceased and drank
the blood, and then divided the heart and

disaster occurred until the wreck was

that time the crew had not a drop of wa
